Age Well offering senior meals in August

For the month of August, Age Well will be hosting special Restaurant Meals for seniors around Addison County. Here is a list of the upcoming Age Well senior luncheons:

HALFWAY HOUSE RESTAURANT — Route 22A, Shoreham. Wednesday, Aug. 9. Arrive after 11 a.m. Meal will be spaghetti with meatballs, vegetable, garlic bread, and dessert. Advanced reservations required. Call Michelle at 802-377-1419 to reserve. $5 suggested donation does not include gratuity. Open to anyone age 60 and up.

Vermont Gleaning Collective seeks volunteers

ADDISON COUNTY — Despite clouds and rain this spring, crops across Vermont are growing and farmers are seeking gleaners. Gleaning is the act of collecting crops that farmers do not pick or that remain unsold after harvest.

Vermont seeks federal aid for flooding

MONTPELIER — Gov. Phil Scott has requested federal disaster funds to assist communities in up to seven Vermont counties in paying for repairs to public infrastructure damaged in severe storms on June 29 through July 1. Communities in Addison, Bennington, Caledonia, Orange, Rutland, Washington, and Windsor counties sustained damages that meet or exceed minimum thresholds to qualify for a Public Assistance disaster declaration.

County firemen earn statewide recognition

ADDISON COUNTY — When a fire destroyed the Blue Spruce Motel in Middlebury on July 12, volunteers from seven area fire departments responded with many firefighters going beyond the call of duty. The Addison County fire service was working like a well-oiled machine to ensure that citizens were safe and property damage was kept to a minimum.

It was this type of selfless hard work that earned four county firefighters from three departments recognition from a statewide organization earlier this month.

Tour de Farms gears up for Aug. 6

BRISTOL — The 10th annual Tour de Farms, one of Vermont’s oldest biking and tasting tours of working farms, is in the final stages of preparation for Sunday, Aug. 6. in Bristol.

The tour will start at 8:30 a.m. and end at 4 p.m. at the Rec Club Field, next to Mount Abraham Union High School. The route will feature nine farm stops and 31 farms, food producers and restaurants, including the Bobcat Café and Mary’s at Baldwin Creek, collaborating to provide riders with fresh samples of the summer’s bounty.

Vermont State Police Log: Several men cited for DUI, including one for also speeding over 100 mph

ADDISON COUNTY — Gregory West wasn’t the only person in Addison County charged by Vermont State Police last week with driving while intoxicated, but he was the only one who was also charged for driving faster than 100 miles per hour.

On July 21 at approximately 6:27 p.m. a trooper saw a vehicle traveling northbound on Route 7 in Waltham at a high rate of speed. A radar unit recorded the vehicle was traveling at 102 mph in a posted 50 mph zone.

A Vermont outdoorsman at Glacier National Park

Middlebury College computer science professor — and outdoors and nature writer — Matthew Dickerson spent June 6 through July 1 at Glacier National Park, surrounded by the majesty of the Rocky Mountains, as its official Artist in Residence.

Dickerson, a 54-year-old Bristol resident, has been an Addison Independent outdoors columnist for the past 20 years. He wrote four columns for us on his experience in the big sky country of Montana.

The fair offers opportunities to exhibit handicrafts, art and photography, foods, flowers and garden products. There are premiums and prizes offered, as well as the chance to show your work and inspire others.
