BRISTOL — The Bristol selectboard on Monday voted to close the town landfill when its current certification expires at the end of 2016.

The decision came after what Town Administrator Therese Kirby called a productive meeting between town and state Agency of Natural Resources officials to find ways to fund the landfill’s closure.

“They understand the plight of Bristol residents and are trying to help us avoid bonding, look for money, and find an alternative (landfill) cover,” Kirby said.

BRISTOL — Bristol Fire Chief Brett LaRose gave a grim appraisal of the town firehouse’s condition to the Bristol selectboard Monday evening.

LaRose presented a 10-page study by Williston firm Childs Engineering that outlined the numerous shortcomings of the North Street firehouse, which was built in 1897.

“This report makes it reality, all the issues we have had and currently have,” LaRose told the board. “We’re dealing with a building that’s just unsafe.”

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College this month announced a plan to sell a number of residential homes it owns to faculty at a discounted rate, while real estate professionals disagree over whether the prospective sales could depress home values in town.

The college said the initiative is part of an effort to help new faculty members find suitable, affordable housing close to campus. Presently, the college rents out the houses to faculty.

BRISTOL — The Mount Abraham Union High School board, at their meeting Tuesday evening, performed an autopsy on the lopsided defeat of a $32.6 million bond proposal to renovate the aging Bristol school.

The board came to a consensus on the primary reason the bond failed: taxpayers were unwilling to foot the bill.

Residents of the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union’s five sending towns on Nov. 4 voted down the proposal, 3,328 to 1,239.

New Haven resident pitches solar park idea

Posted on November 17, 2014 |
By Zach Despart

NEW HAVEN — As New Haven sorts through more than a dozen solar projects proposed in town, a resident has an idea that he says would mollify the siting concerns of neighbors and also allow solar firms to make the best use of the town’s abundance of flat, open farmland.

Residents have raised concerns about the Public Service Board approving one-acre, 150-kilowatt solar arrays to be built in residential areas, often a stone’s throw from their homes. Some say they’re ugly, while others are concerned that nearby arrays will devalue their property.
