BRANDON — Adam Harrison has a lot to live for. With his partner Kristin Piper, he has a three year-old son, Booker, and a seven-week-old son named Shepherd.

In fact, it was two days before Shepherd was born, on April 3, when Harrison was told he has cancer.

He knew something was wrong a few weeks before, when he was working at New England Woodcraft and started coughing up blood.

It turned out to be testicular cancer, for which Harrison had none of the usual symptoms, and it had spread to his lungs and abdomen.

CASTLETON/BRANDON — “No one thinks about mental illness until it affects someone close to them,” Ron Powers said. “It’s a primal fear. We see demonic transformation and when we see that, we see versions of ourselves.”

Student exchange at OV .jpg

LEICESTER — Imagine you’re spending 10 months in a foreign country, and you don’t know a soul.

Now imagine you’re only 16 or 17 years old.

Wouldn’t it be great if you had a host family to take you in and help you navigate American culture?

David Allan is hoping more families in the Addison and Rutland counties feel that way. In his second year as an area representative for World Heritage International, a non-profit student exchange organization, Allan is one of only two reps in the state of Vermont.
