Middlebury opens new town office

MIDDLEBURY — Monday ushered in a new era for Middlebury municipal employees, who began working in the new, expansive town office building at 77 Main St. And on Tuesday, those workers were still pinching themselves as they settled into a facility that was more than a decade in the making.

“It doesn’t seem real quite yet,” a beaming Beth Dow said from her sumptuous office on the second floor of the stately structure.

Porter officials ready for new chapter

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials last week publicly apologized for what they acknowledged have been almost 10 months of internal strife within the hospital, and urged physicians, nurses, staff and patients to help them turn the page to a new chapter in the organization’s 91-year history.

House Speaker Smith, Rep. Jewett weigh future plans

MONTPELIER — Vermont House of Representatives Speaker Shap Smith might re-enter the race for governor, and one decision he has already made could affect the plans of at least one Addison County lawmaker.

Smith, a Morrisville Democrat, acknowledged in a March 30 phone interview with the Independent that he might re-insert himself into the contest for governor, this after having withdrawn from the race this past November.

ACSU considers switch to global education plan

Orwell-area schools vote on unification plan

Porter Medical Center says it will close one doctors' office

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center officials on Wednesday promised to lead the organization out of its current period of financial challenges and broken morale, but served notice that the entire hospital community would in the meantime experience some short-term pain.

PMC’s interim CEO, Dr. Fred Kniffin, provided a vivid preview of that pain during a jam-packed annual meeting held in Middlebury College’s Bicentennial Hall, announcing the closing of the Porter Internal Medicine physicians practice.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard has agreed to consider some new flooring for the multi-purpose room of the town’s new recreation facility, in light of news that the current surface has allegedly led to some injuries suffered by participants in the recreation department’s dance program.

Middlebury church raises $1.3 million for addition in a month
