STARKSBORO — A suspected chimney fire on Saturday, Feb. 13, caused some significant damage to the upper floor of a single-family home at Lewis Creek Farm off Route 116 in Starksboro, but the structure was saved during a frigid night thanks to the efforts of firefighters from several area departments.

It was at around 6 p.m. that Starksboro firefighters were toned out to the reported fire at 3071 Route 116, according to Chief Tom Estey. Homeowner Hank Bissell reported the fire after noticing smoke in the house, Estey said.

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center (PMC) officials on Tuesday confirmed the organization’s workforce will be trimmed by 17.5 full-time equivalent positions, as opposed to the nine jobs originally disclosed this past Friday.

Officials said the updated, higher number reflects an additional 8.5 Registered Nurse positions that PMC could not publicly divulge on Friday due to the collective bargaining process that management and the nurses’ union follow when considering a reduction in force.

By John Flowers

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury voters at their town meeting will decide a proposed 2016-2017 municipal spending plan that will not require an increase in property taxes.

The budget — which does not reflect local education spending — will require $6,943,658 in property taxes. If OK’d by voters on Feb. 29, this would translate into the same municipal property tax rate of 98 cents per $100 in property value that residents are currently paying for town services.

WEYBRIDGE — Nothing like spending a sunny afternoon hiking up a mountain. The picnic lunch tastes even better with a panoramic view.

But how about driving four hours to get to the base of a mountain for a hike of more than 4,000 feet to the summit, wading through armpit-high snowdrifts while braving sub-zero temperatures and fierce winds with only a frozen hard-boiled egg to gnaw on for sustenance? How about facing that kind of challenge 115 times on mountains throughout the Northeast — and only during the winter?

MIDDLEBURY — It was around a decade ago that Jeff Weaber began brewing a healthy, fermented beverage called kombucha at his family’s home in Salisbury.
