Victor Nuovo post heart attack_2587.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Selectman Victor Nuovo rarely misses board meetings. And on the rare occasions he does, it’s usually because he’s traveling abroad to research his latest book project.

However, when the 86-year-old took his place at the selectboard table on April 10 it was the first time he’d been to a meeting in almost six weeks. The reason: He’s been recovering from a major heart attack.

SHOREHAM — The Shoreham Zoning Board of Adjustment has given its conditional approval to a 7,545-square-foot Dollar General store to be built on a 1-acre parcel on the east side of Route 22A, and the applicants have said the new building could be in place before the end of the year.

Malcolm, Nacny 2018_7457.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Nancy Malcolm never planned on joining the planning commission. It was former Better Middlebury Partnership Coordinator Gail Freidin who encouraged her to join in 2005.

“I had never thought about it, which begs the issue that you do have to ask and recruit new people,” she said.

Thirteen years later, Malcolm is stepping away from the commission after having led it through a very busy period that included a massive re-write of the Middlebury Town Plan.

WEYBRIDGE — The subject of raising the minimum wage has always generated a lot of debate in the Vermont Statehouse; and it prompted a good deal of conversation at Monday’s legislative breakfast at the Weybridge Congregational Church.

Advocates tout the benefits of higher pay for the state’s lowest wage earners, while opponents decry the potential impact on small businesses that can’t afford the expense.

Legislators defend new gun safety laws; some believe rules go too far

WEYBRIDGE — Vermont’s new gun laws drew a lot of discussion among participants at Monday’s legislative breakfast at the Weybridge Congregational Church, including from students of nearby Weybridge Elementary School, who came to see what their elected state representatives were up to.

One student asked lawmakers why they decided to limit the capacity of ammunition magazines sold in Vermont to 10 rounds.

Newell gets max sentence Shawn Newell.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Heather Kerr had waited 362 days to address the man responsible for her brother Brian’s death, and she wasn’t going to hold back. Her words pierced the silence of the Middlebury courtroom on Monday and landed squarely upon a visibly shaken Shawn Newell.

Newell, on April 20, 2017, was speeding northbound on Route 7 in Salisbury when he drove into the southbound lane to pass a slower vehicle and struck, head-on, a vehicle containing Christina Walker and Brian Kerr of Ripton.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard last week gave a tentative nod to a proposed 500-kilowatt solar project that would be nestled between two existing solar farms of identical size within the South Ridge planned unit development off Meadow Glen Road.

The selectboard won’t make its endorsement official, however, until the planning commission and the public weigh in on the plan that is being pitched by Middle Road Ventures LLC. Officials have set a Tuesday, May 8, public hearing on the proposal.

Full Sun’s presses will spring back into motion in a few months. Only they’ll be pressing hemp seeds, not sunflower seeds.
