Two fire departments land big FEMA grants

MIDDLEURY — The Middlebury and Ferrisburgh fire departments have reaped a combined total of $295,985 in federal grant money to buy equipment that will keep their firefighters safer and thereby allow them to better serve local residents.

Locals weigh in on bridge work: Middlebury to share results of new survey

MIDDLEBURY — At its Tuesday meeting, the Middlebury selectboard received an update on the downtown Middlebury rail bridges project. Jim Gish, community liaison for the $52 million project, said he will soon release results of a recent survey on local folks’ reactions to the new temporary bridges on Merchants Row and Main Street. Gish said 250 people responded to the report, with a majority expressing positive reactions to the construction and related communication this past summer.

WomenSafe seeking new digs; nonprofit working on fundraising drive to expand offerings

Addison Central schools need work; report puts price tag at $31 million over next five years

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District’s 12 buildings spread throughout seven Middlebury-area communities could require a combined total of as much as $31 million in upgrades and repairs within the next five years, according to a new report commissioned by ACSD officials.

Medicinal marijuana dispensary possible in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A Burlington company is scouting a location near downtown Middlebury for operation of a medical marijuana dispensary.

The company in question is the Champlain Valley Dispensary (CVD), which currently supplies around 3,000 qualifying patients with medical marijuana — under strict state guidelines — in Burlington and Brattleboro.

“We want to give (Addison County patients) the convenience of not having to travel to Burlington,” said Shayne Linn, executive director of CVD.

Hannaford Career Center teachers ink new two-year pact

MIDDLEBURY — Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center (PHCC) officials on Monday confirmed a new, two-year deal with the school’s 19 full- and part-time teachers that includes annual raises and a requirement that educators pay a greater proportion of their health insurance.

The current base pay for a starting teacher at the PHCC is $42,256, according to Jason Larocque, chairman of the career center board. The new contract guarantees a 1.5 percent increase in that base pay in year one, and a 1.25-percent rise in year two of the pact.

Middlebury officials weigh in on marijuana; selectboard backs modified VLCT position

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury selectboard on Tuesday unanimously endorsed a slightly modified version of the Vermont League of Cities and Towns’ (VLCT) current position on legalizing marijuana, stating that cannabis should be OK’d for recreational use only after related “public safety, public health and local regulatory and budgetary concerns are adequately addressed.”

The board’s vote comes in wake of a recent townwide survey in which 71 percent of the 773 respondents said they believed Vermont should legalize recreational marijuana.

Middlebury board OKs new Tractor Supply store; some merchants angry about decision

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Development Review Board on Monday gave its unanimous approval to a 19,113-square-foot Tractor Supply retail store off Foote Street, to be sited on a 6.5-acre parcel located behind the A&W Restaurant.

The plan must now win an Act 250 permit in order to proceed to construction, which could happen as soon as next spring for a store opening by September or October 2018.

Middlebury to vote on Vt. Gas easements on Nov. 7

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury residents on Nov. 7 will vote on whether their community should charge Vermont Gas for three pipeline easements it is seeking on town-owned property.

The selectboard has tentatively decided to give those easements for free to Vermont Gas, which is building out distribution lines within the community for its Addison Natural Gas Project.

But local resident Ross Conrad believes Vermont Gas should have to pay for those easements, and he launched a successful citizens’ petition effort to give residents a say on the matter.
