MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Democrat Robin Scheu has spent the past 15 years considering a run for the state Legislature.

This is the year she puts her campaign into motion.

Scheu, executive director of the Addison County Economic Development Corp. (ACEDC), confirmed on Monday she will run for one of the two seats representing Middlebury in the Vermont House. Her decision was fanned by the recent announcement by Rep. Betty Nuovo, D-Middlebury, to call it quits this year after three decades in the House.

RIPTON — A March 4 recount of Town Meeting Day election ballots in Ripton confirmed the election of Perry Hanson over incumbent Selectman Richard Collitt, by the same 116-112 tally. Collitt had requested the recount in light of the closeness of the election.

Hanson — who, in addition to winning a seat on the town selectboard, also won election to Ripton’s seat on the new Addison Central School District board last Tuesday — was pleased with the results of the recount.

PeterBriggs1168.jpg

ADDISON — Peter Briggs is used to doing a lot of chores on his family’s farm in Addison, from milking to tilling.

His to-do list just got a lot longer.

Briggs, 25, confirmed this week that he will be a Republican candidate for one of the two seats in the Vermont Senate representing Addison County, Huntington and Buel’s Gore. That will mean a lot of door-to-door and public appearances throughout the spring and summer in a race that could include the two established incumbents: Democratic Sens. Claire Ayer of Addison and Chris Bray of New Haven.

By John Flowers

JeffMack9898.jpg

SHOREHAM — Some residents of Lapham Bay Road in Shoreham are asking their selectboard to pass a local ordinance regulating coyote hunting in town. They believe that nothing short of a new law will put an end to what they allege have been cases of trespassing and irresponsible shooting that made them feel unsafe on their own property.

State officials, meanwhile, said a local law would not supersede current Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department regulations that allow for coyotes to be hunted 24/7, throughout the year.
