Communal septic system sought for one of county's biggest trailer parks

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison County Community Trust (ACCT) is seeking funding for a communal sewage disposal system to serve the 67-unit Lindale Mobile Home Park off Route 116/Case Street in Middlebury.

This is a plan that advocates believe will cost-effectively remedy the increasing number of failing, individual septic systems within what is one of the county’s largest affordable housing developments.

Grant to fund opiate education in Bristol-area grade schools

MIDDLEBURY — A federal grant will be used to “HELP” students in Bristol-area schools learn about and fight opiate addiction.

The $15,000 Regional Prevention Partnership grant, which flows through the Vermont Department of Health to the United Way of Addison County, will enhance UWAC’s “HELP” initiative.

Local United Way searching for a new leader: McGowan steps down after 14 years

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County Executive Director Kate McGowan has helped the leaders of a lot of local nonprofits strategize on funding and delivering charitable services to the people who need them most.

After 14 years spent improving human services in Addison County, McGowan now wants to help nonprofits on a statewide scale. On Thursday she announced that she’s resigning from her position to become interim director of the Center for New Leadership, or CNL, which is run out of the Marlboro College Graduate School in Brattleboro.

Middlebury-area school board on path to level-funded budget; teachers brace for layoffs

MIDDLEBURY — The Addison Central School District (ACSD) board on Monday agreed to pursue a level-funded budget for member-schools for the upcoming 2018-2019 academic year, a move that would require more than $1.9 million in cuts and a potential reduction of 14 teaching positions, 18 paraprofessionals, a principal’s post and a central office worker.

United Way renews call for donations

MIDDLEBURY — United Way of Addison County (UWAC) officials are renewing requests for support of two concurrent fund drives aimed at helping people get food, shelter, counseling and other services that are currently beyond their reach.

UWAC in September launched its 2017 fundraising campaign, through which it hopes to raise $650,000 to benefit local nonprofits helping Addison County residents in need.

Middlebury motel to get sweet makeover

MIDDLEBURY — Finding a piece of candy on your hotel bed is always a nice surprise.

Future guests at the Greystone Motel at 1395 Route 7 South in Middlebury will not only get the pillow chocolate, but also licorice, chewing gum or lemon drops, depending on the room in which they stay.

So pack some extra toothpaste, because Brad and Blanca Jenne, longtime owners of Middlebury Sweets, are closing in on a deal to buy the Greystone Motel and make it the new home of “Vermont’s largest candy store.”

ACSD board to consider major staff cuts: Draft budget reflects 14 teacher layoffs

MIDDLEBURY — Addison Central School District board members knew they would be in for a shock when they asked ACSD administrators to show them what a level-funded budget would look like for the 2018-2019 academic year.

And a shock is what they’ll get on Monday, Dec. 11, when they learn that a level-funded spending plan for the district’s nine schools could translate into a reduction of 14 licensed teachers, 18 paraprofessionals, a principal and a central office worker.

Middlebury 'Sleep Out' yields more than $46K to help homeless

MIDDLEBURY — John Graham Housing & Services’ (JGHS) fourth annual “Sleep Out,” held near the Otter Creek Falls in Middlebury overnight from Dec. 2 to 3, raised more than $46,000 for programs helping homeless people in Addison County.

Elizabeth Ready, executive director of JGHS, said the impressive total is likely to climb even higher as participants and donors confirm their pledges and hand in their checks during the coming days.

Middlebury gives preliminary OK to medical marijuana dispensary

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Development Review Board (DRB) has given a preliminary OK to a medical marijuana dispensary on Route 7 South.

Applicants will now fine-tune their proposal based on feedback they received from DRB members at their Nov. 27 meeting. The dispensary could earn a final go-ahead at either the DRB’s Jan. 8 or Jan. 22 meetings.

Brandon already has a medical marijuana dispensary.

New high-end apartments proposed for Washington Street in Middlebury

MIDDLEBURY — A plan to install eight high-end apartments in the former Vermont Federal Credit Union building at 24 Washington St. in Middlebury has gained preliminary approval from the Middlebury Development Review Board (DRB).

The applicants must fine-tune their proposals based on feedback they received from DRB members at a Nov. 27 meeting. The plan for the apartment could earn a final go-ahead at either the DRB’s Jan. 8 or Jan. 22 meetings.
