Jessie Raymond: Teleportation? Beam me up, Scotty

Posted on June 30, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

You heard the news, right? Last week the Russians announced that they would like to get serious about teleportation. That’s right: They want to make that old sci-fi standby a reality by 2025.

Finally.

Jessie Raymond: Meet Master Overbuilder and Lazy J

Posted on June 16, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

I’ve got an idea: I’m going to write a children’s book.

I’m calling it “Master Overbuilder and Lazy J Work on the Garden,” a whimsical tale about a married couple and one of their many adventures. (It is purely fictional and not based on anything that happened at my house two weekends ago.)

Jessie Raymond: Goats crossed the road, and the line

Posted on June 1, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

Jessie's column Jasper 3 cmyk.jpg

It’s the end of an era at our little homestead, the Lazy J. For the first time in almost a decade, the property is goatless. We have sent our two goats, Jasper and Daphne, to live with a new family in Castleton.

Our decision to rehome them came this spring, after our eldest goat, Lucy, died. (It was harder on us than you might expect; I wore a black armband on my barn coat for weeks.) Suddenly, Jasper and Daphne decided they were not only free-range, but also free to leave the property.

Jessie Raymond: Case of missing slippers haunting

Posted on May 19, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

A few days ago, my slippers disappeared.

I checked everywhere, even in the closet where they belonged (otherwise known as “the last place I’d ever put them”).

I looked in every room. I looked under the couches and under the beds. Twice. I checked the fridge, because you just never know. I tiptoed through the house, peeking around corners, in hopes of catching the slippers off guard.

Jessie Raymond: Trip plans hinged on luck of the Irish

Posted on May 5, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

In 2019, my husband Mark and I will reach a milestone: our 25th wedding anniversary. I want to celebrate with a trip.

It’s early yet, but I thought I’d better spring the idea on him sooner rather than later so (a) we’d have time to save up for this adventure, and (b) he could get used to the idea of leaving his Addison County comfort zone.

I want to go to Ireland.

Jessie Raymond: Yoga helps keep 'Bigfoot' at bay

Posted on April 21, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

Getting out of bed a while back, I heard a creaking sound.

It was me.

I’m not saying I normally expect to wake up, spring to my feet, jeté into the hall and then somersaulting down the stairs like a Slinky. My mornings start with a subdued but single-minded shuffle from the bed to the coffeemaker.

But this winter I started noticing a measurable lapse of time between “sitting up in bed” and “standing up.” My muscles and joints seem to resent the sudden change in plans.

I just turned 48. What gives?

Jessie Raymond: Trying to keep fit, one step at a time

Posted on April 7, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

How many steps do I take in a day?

Better question: Why would I care?

I care because I’m one of those people who get caught up in quantifying everything in order to tell how healthy they are. The trendy metric these days is steps: You need to take 10,000 of them a day.

Jessie Raymond: Disgust gives way to good deed

Posted on March 24, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

Last week marked a personal victory: I touched an earthworm. On purpose.

Since I am, at least in a general sense, a gardener, you would think I am forever touching worms — running my hands through the rich soil and marveling at the serpentine creatures that tunnel through it, aerating it while breaking down the organic matter.

Hardly.

I know earthworms are highly beneficial creatures. There’s just one thing: They’re gross.

Out and About: Theater Times Three

Posted on March 17, 2016 | Blog Category:
By Jessie Raymond

Given the nature of the last two Addison Independent community calendar events I attended, and one I will be attending this weekend, the theme of this post will be “The Theatah.” (In my head, I pronounce it in the snooty, British aristocrat way because that’s how I’ve always tended to think of the theater: highbrow, a bit pretentious, and not something meant for those of us who are perfectly happy to stay home and watch Netflix.)

Jessie Raymond: The (hand)writing is on the wall

Posted on March 10, 2016 |
By Jessie Raymond

One day a few years ago I found myself holding a tattered piece of paper embellished with mysterious writing.

The words, one or two per line, appeared to be in code. English? Perhaps. But I couldn’t make out what they said. Was this a ransom note? A warning? The secret formula for Coca-Cola?

Well, no, actually. It was my grocery list.

I had jotted the items down earlier in the week. But none of the words looked familiar. The lines rambled like the path of an inebriated beetle in the throes of a Charley horse.

I squinted at it.
