Letter to the Editor: Weinstein hurt Vermont actor's career

Posted on November 22, 2017 |
By Jay Craven

I hope that recent revelations about sexual violence by powerful men will foster important transformations on the American cultural landscape. Women are speaking out and things are changing.

Much of this shift can be traced to New York Times and New Yorker allegations that movie mogul Harvey Weinstein acted for decades as a serial sexual predator. More than 60 women have now spoken publically about Weinstein’s transgressions against them, saying, “me, too.”

Discover something new at the film festival

Posted on August 24, 2017 |
By Jay Craven

Festivals provide us with the equivalent of extra holidays.  They allow us to suspend business as usual and take time off from work or our daily routine to discover the unexpected. We get to see friends in a new setting or catch up with people we haven’t seen for a while. Maybe we punctuate our comings and goings with a shared meal or hot fudge sundae.

Pulitzer Prize finalist Dick Lehr is a fearless investigative writer. He will appear at this year’s Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival to talk about his work, which has led to the production of two films (“Black Mass” and “The Birth of a Movement”) along with two more (“The Fence” and “Judgment Ridge”) that are now in development.

Character actors' contributions to be highlighted at festival

Posted on August 21, 2017 |
By Jay Craven

Great character-actors often go underappreciated and they’re usually underrated for the impact they have in our star-driven film industry. I’m sure this can be discouraging for the actor — they can deliver a richly nuanced performance only to have it upstaged by the muscular plot or movie stars that Hollywood uses to sell tickets. But that comes with the territory.

The road for independent filmmakers is tough. This is one reason that film festivals are important — they reach audiences outside the commercial distribution system.

Vermont novelist Howard Frank Mosher died on Jan. 29 this year. Filmmaker Jay Craven has worked closely with Mosher since 1985, making five films based on his stories. Craven will be on tour this summer, screening his first Mosher feature film,“Where the Rivers Flow North,” and providing reflections on his three decades of collaboration with the Northeast Kingdom writer. Craven will present his program on Sunday, July 30, 7 p.m., at the Middlebury Town Hall Theater.

Like thousands of Vermonters who have been touched by Howard Mosher and his writing, I feel a deep sense of loss at the realization of life without him.

Skype session with Norman Lear on tap at THT

Jay Craven on Norman Lear.jpg

I’m a Baby Boomer, born in 1950. I guess I was in the first wave of kids who never knew life without television. My early recollections of living in my small town outside Philadelphia included watching TV shows like “Ding Dong School,” “Howdy Doody,” “Mickey Mouse Club” and “Davy Crockett” with Fess Parker.

The curtain rises for Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival

Posted on August 25, 2016 |
By Jay Craven

Tonight’s opening night Festival screening is sold out—but tickets and passes are available for all other weekend programs.  I’ve previously outlined a few film screening highlights, with the disclaimer that producer Lloyd Komesar and I believe that each of our programmed films has something potent to distinguish it from the nearly 400 films submitted. We like to think of audiences being able to make their own discoveries.

Documentaries to shine at Middlebury film festival

MIDDLEBURY — It must be August, since my pulse is quickening with thoughts of the upcoming Middlebury New Filmmakers Festival that will take place Aug. 25-28.  Festival producer Lloyd Komesar was committed to the long haul for our festival, but last year’s popular and well-received first edition insured that we’d do it again. The 2015 event was lots of fun, with a spontaneous air of discovery, as audiences moved around town, taking chances on unknown “first and second films” that provided fresh opportunities for discovery.
