Greg Dennis: Nixon was worse than Trump

Posted on January 10, 2019 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

One of the benefits of age is perspective, a sense of what matters most over time. With that perspective, I suggest that we have seen worse than Donald Trump, and that the republic will survive.

This is not to underestimate the horror that is the Trump presidency.

On top of denying climate change and removing environmental protections — on top of all the lying, the overt racism and the demeaning schoolyard taunts on Twitter — on top of all that, we have the train wreck that was the Trump campaign and subsequent cover up. We already know this:

Greg Dennis: Baby, it's politically incorrect outside

Posted on December 20, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

I had to laugh when I read that the Politically Correct Police are upset about the words to “Baby It’s Cold Outside.” Can’t we just have a little innocent holiday fun without putting every male-female interaction under a microscope?

Then I took a closer look at the song’s lyrics. And decided that in this case, the word cops do have a point.

Greg Dennis: Times a-changing for women in politics, or are they?

Posted on December 6, 2018 |

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

When Becca Balint was first running for a Windsor County seat in the Vermont State Senate, she got a postcard from an anonymous sender with this message: “I urge you to end your political ambitions and stay home with your children.”

Too often even today, that’s what it’s like for women in politics.

Greg Dennis: Gratitude for all things local

Posted on November 21, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

As far as I can tell, only Americans, Canadians and Liberians have a holiday dedicated to the general giving of thanks.

So as the seas rise, the weather gets weird, and the president tries to make a mockery of our democracy, it’s a good time to remember those things for which we can be thankful.

Everyone has a list of the profoundly personal things that merit our gratitude. But what of those things we share? We, that is, who live in this quirky county that stretches from the west coast of New England to the snowy spine of the Green Mountains.

Greg Dennis: I Volted: The how and why of EVs

Posted on November 8, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

It’s foolish to think that we can buy our way out of the climate crisis. But for those of us who lose sleep over what climate change will mean for the planet, getting an electric vehicle is one way to feel like we’re doing something.

The recent U.N. report says it will take massive, systemic changes in energy to avoid the extreme heat, poverty, rising sea levels and food insecurity that will otherwise be our fate by 2030.

UPDATED: Greg Dennis: 'Trump' weighs in on county elections

Posted on October 25, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

UPDATED:

With the election less than two weeks away, I sat down recently with President Donald Trump for another of our intermittent (and imaginary) political “discussions.”

GD: Mr. President, I understand you’ve taken a surprising amount of interest in the Addison County State Senate race. Why is that?

DT: You’ve got this guy Paul Ralston in the race. He’s a lot like me.

GD: How so?

DT: Well, he saw the light. He used to be a Democrat and now he’s a Republican.

Greg Dennis: Revisiting Justice Kavanaugh and Sen. Leahy

Posted on October 11, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

As Justice Brett Kavanaugh hears his first case on the Supreme Court this week, it’s worth looking back at the role played by Vermont’s longtime senator, Patrick Leahy, in his staunch opposition to confirming Kavanaugh.

No senator shined as brightly as Leahy did during the confirmation battle. The senator, now 78, has slowed down in recent years. But in his sometimes angry and ultimately convincing opposition to having Kavanaugh on the court, he showed that even aging lions can roar magnificently.

Greg Dennis: Passions running high in State Senate race

Posted on September 27, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

Call it the Trump Effect.

As political passions run high approaching the national midterm elections, some of that tension seems to be drifting into our normally low-key legislative races. Ground zero for that is the race for our county’s two State Senate seats.

Greg Dennis: Hard questions for liberals

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

“It is understandable why so few people attempt shadow work. It is much easier to scapegoat others, blame and feel superior to them… But therein is the moral task — to grow up and to lift this burden that we bring to the collective, to free our children, our partners, our tribe.”

— James Hollis, “Why Good People Do Bad Things”

Greg Dennis: 'Rise for Climate' set for Sept. 8

Posted on August 30, 2018 |
By Greg Dennis

Dennis, Greg ONLINE.jpg

President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement left many people with the impression there’s not much America could do about global warming until we get a new administration.

But now an international climate conference — and thousands of local events planned ahead of that gathering — are giving new hope to those who see climate change as a moral issue and a mortal threat to civilization.
