PROCTOR—On Wednesday, when the bailiff called, “All rise” and five Supreme Court Justices entered the courtroom, they were not entering a courtroom at all, but rather the stage of Proctor Jr/Sr High School’s gymnasium.

LB4Paint2018-133.jpg

In a sun-lit home studio at her Shoreham home, artist Lisa Balfour mixes red, blue, orange and yellow acrylic paints into two plastic cups. With steady, quick hands, she flips them onto a white, wood-framed canvas, holding them upside-down until all of the paint drips and settles within the cups’ edges. After a few seconds, she uses the lip of the cup to push the paint in gentle swirls around the canvas.

Tammy Weaving large basket-201-2 (1).jpg

Many artistic endeavors start in a studio, but basket-weaver Tamara Wight begins her creative process outdoors. On walks through the forest and along Sunset Lake in Brookfield, Vt., her home town, Wight gathers rocks, pebbles and interesting pieces of wood.

She takes these ingredients home and holds onto them until she has a moment of creative inspiration, usually during the night. Then, the rocks and branches become the foundation for her baskets, many of which are on display at Creative Space Gallery in Vergennes.

ORWELL/MENDON — On a snowy Friday in early March, Orwell Village School sixth-grader Jacob Clifford sits on a chairlift at Pico Mountain in Mendon. Normally, he’d be in math class at around this time, but on this day he’s mastering a jump in Pico’s terrain park.
