ADDISON COUNTY — In less than five minutes, members of the Middlebury Volunteer Fire Department will answer a call, throw on their heavy gear, pile into their fleet of trucks, switch on the siren and head out for their mission.

“We have a joke,” said Middlebury Department Chief David Shaw. “If we’re not out of here in five minutes, we’re not coming.”

The Vergennes Fire Department firefighters pride themselves on the time they arrived at Basin Harbor Club in seven minutes, a trip that usually takes about 20 minutes.

ADDISON COUNTY — He only needs a room, a few decent meals, a table to work on and access to the outdoors. In exchange, Jim Mott promises a painting and pleasant company.

“It’s just art for hospitality around the USA,” he says of the Itinerant Artist Project, his 16-year-old mission to spread the gift of art to strangers across the country.

Since 2000, Mott has spent one month each year touring different parts of the country, and staying with hosts in exchange for a six-by-nine-inch painting.

If it can be wrapped in dough and fried, Emily Miner has probably already done it.

“We try everything, and if it blows up in the fryer, we just take it out real quick,” she said during a short break at Field Days last week.

Miner, 34, is the owner of Thelma’s, a mobile food truck that was born in 1979 when her grandma Thelma Miner walked into the Addison County Fair and Field Days with her own cart and a recipe for fried bread dough with maple cream.

NEW HAVEN — As the sun set Tuesday night, the first day of the Addison County Fair and Field Days came to a triumphant close with the annual opening parade, a tradition as old as the fair itself.

The parade featured more than 25 groups, each eager to share their favorite thing about Field Days, the theme for the 2016 parade.

“My favorite thing about Field Days is all of it.” said Rustan Swenson, drum major for the Seth Warner Mt. Independence Fife and Drum Corps. “I’m serious, everything, I love it all.”
