Starksboro is rallying around its historic meeting house

Starksboro mtg house_4685.jpg

STARKSBORO — During a tour of the Starksboro Village Meeting House last Thursday the sun cut through the clouds and struck the south side of the building full-on. In the cold quiet sanctuary, whose stained-glass windows converted that sunlight into a sudden holy glow, it almost felt like the historic old structure had taken a breath.

Only a tiny bit of poetic license is needed to suggest — at least after this year’s town meeting — that this was a sigh of relief.

WEYBRIDGE — At the same time that forest science students at the Patricia A. Hannaford Career Center are learning the art of maple syrup production they’re also attempting to revolutionize it with a device to measure sap flow.

Teacher Aaron Townshend and student John Bent call it the “maple weir,” and they, along with Hannaford STEM student Will Larocque, are field-testing it this week at the Lemon Fair Road sugarhouse operated by the Career Center in Weybridge.

Monkton Gen Store saved_4452 CMYK.jpg

MONKTON — One week after they approved budgets, elected local leaders and attended to other details of our democracy, Addison County residents, especially in Monkton, came out in droves to do a little more voting — this time with their wallets.

There was only one issue on the ballot: Does the community want the Monkton General Store (MGS) to stick around?

MAUSD offers free workshop to foster trust

Posted on March 11, 2019 |
By Christopher Ross

BRISTOL — On Saturday, March 16, the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) will host a free six-hour workshop at Bristol Elementary School — its first major step, post-unification, toward fostering better communication within the 5-Towns community.

“What’s at the heart of this is building trust and relationships,” said MAUSD Superintendent Patrick Reen. “The board and the administration are hearing, in various ways, that that trust isn’t there. We want to build that, and this is a step in doing so.”

Bristol walking_4276.jpg

BRISTOL — Darkness. Arctic weather. Chunky boots. Vermont winters often make it hard to go for a walk.

But as the days get longer and the snowdrifts shrink (at least for now, anyway), a new group is making walking plans for the town of Bristol. Heck, they’re not even waiting for spring.

STARKSBORO — Between a couple of basketball hoops in a sunny gymnasium decorated with children’s fitness posters, 111 people took time out of their busy Saturday morning to accomplish some Vermont-style capital-D Democracy at the Starksboro town meeting.

In spite of occasional debate, amendments and even amendments to the amendments, there was something almost luxurious about the three hours the community took to get the town’s business done that day.

Mt. Abe district report rejected

BRISTOL — A few minutes into the second annual meeting of the Mount Abraham Unified School District (MAUSD) Tuesday evening, moderator Pam Marsh asked for a motion to adopt the report of the school district’s offices.

What she got instead was quite the opposite.

“I move that we reject the report because it says that it has the proposed 2019–20 budget and I cannot find a proper budget in here anywhere,” said Bristol resident Brenda Tillberg.

BRISTOL — Mold that was recently discovered in the boys’ shower rooms at Mount Abraham Union High School has spread farther than was previously thought.

Earlier this month district officials discovered leaky plumbing and mold inside the walls of two shower rooms and immediately set about dealing with it. On Monday, the company hired to clean it up made an unwelcome discovery.
