Bristol puts new recreation center plan on hold

BRISTOL — After months of discussion, the Bristol Recreation Community Steering Committee has voted down a plan to develop a new recreation center on the property at 76 West St., in spite of its desirable location and gateway visibility.

The steering committee was formed in September after the town of Bristol on Aug. 20 signed an agreement (contingent upon voter approval) to purchase the 0.59-acre parcel for $166,500, with an eye toward replacing the existing house with facilities that would consolidate the Recreation Department in one location.

Monkton malt grower is expanding — to Charlotte's Nordic Farms

MONKTON — Peterson Quality Malt, which opened Vermont’s first malt house in Monkton five years ago, has purchased Nordic Farms, whose big, red-roofed barn stands at a high-profile location off Route 7 in Charlotte, and will move operations there early next year.

Peterson and its new equity partner, Hotel Vermont in Burlington, purchased the 583-acre former dairy for $2.4 million.

LINCOLN — So profound is the depth of imagination kids summon when they play with toys that it has inspired a special category of storytelling in our culture. From “The Nutcracker” to “The Velveteen Rabbit” to “Toy Story,” we find hope in the notion that our playthings could live separate lives, struggling like we do, fighting our battles, keeping it real when the “real world” intervenes. Integral to many of these stories is the letting go, the heart-wrenching moment when children outgrow their toys and leave them behind forever.

Heavy snow shuts down Bristol-area schools

ADDISON COUNTY — Mount Abraham Unified School District schools were closed all day Thursday because of impassable roads and downed power lines. Other county school districts remained open.

Heavy, wet snow over the preceding couple of days had caused widespread damage and knocked out power to tens of thousands of Vermonters.

Bristol Fire Department honors local businesses

BRISTOL — This autumn the Bristol Fire Department recognized a couple of local businesses for their longtime support.

Desabrais Dry Cleaning, owned and operated by Lucie and Steve Noble, and R&L Rubbish, owned and operated by Richard Rheaume and Louis Poirier, have “truly gone above and beyond for the town of Bristol and their fire department,” said Bristol Fire Chief Brett LaRose.
