Editorial: Act 64 is a sea change in policy

Posted on September 16, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

University of Vermont agronomy specialist Jeff Carter, who works out of the Middlebury office, recently gave adequate warning to Addison County farmers that change was coming in light of a recent agreement between the state agriculture department and the Conservation Law Foundation. In that settlement the state agreed to mandate farms whose land drain into Lake Champlain implement best management practices on their land. It’s a substantial change from previous measures and it comes with significant consequences for those who don’t comply.

Editorial: There is no easy choice for the next governor of Vermont

Posted on September 14, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Vermont now has five capable candidates who have announced their intentions to run for governor: Sue Minter, Shap Smith and Matt Dunne for the Democratic Party’s nomination, and Bruce Lisman and Phil Scott for the Republican Party. As well as being well-rounded, each candidate has their own particular skill set or background that could tip the scales in their favor.

Editorial: The U.S.-Iran deal, politics, and Bernie's rising stature

Posted on September 10, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

“It is my firm belief that the test of a great nation is not how many wars it can engage in, but how it can resolve international conflicts in a peaceful manner. I believe we have an obligation to pursue diplomatic solutions before resorting to military engagement – especially after nearly 14 years of ill-conceived and disastrous military engagements in the region.”

What foreign policy statesman can we attribute to such an enlightened comment?

That would be Vermont’s Sen. Bernie Sanders, sounding very presidential.

Editorial: Governor's race gets interesting

Posted on September 4, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

What’s common about Democrat Matt Dunne and Republican Bruce Lisman entering the Vermont gubernatorial race this week is both candidates are portraying themselves as outsiders with national business experience and outside-the-box political perspectives. Both will also face well-respected, long-time legislative leaders.

From that snapshot, it’s a race pitting political experience against an outsider’s perspective; and to fit in with the popular narrative, they are the anti-establishment candidates bringing new solutions to fix a failed system.

Editorial: How to make silk out of a sow's ear in New Haven

Posted on September 3, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

The town of New Haven offers an interesting lesson in the value of property as it relates to the town’s grand list and tax rates. At issue is a proposal by Anbaric Transmission that essentially adds $130 million to the town’s current grand list of roughly $260 million. That 50 percent increase would seemingly create a huge windfall in terms of property tax relief.

Editorial: Shap Smith enters exciting race for governor

Posted on August 24, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Vermont House Speaker Shap Smith officially announced his candidacy for governor as a Democrat in typical fashion: a straightforward announcement that nonchalantly recapped his life and career in Vermont, while intoning Vermont as a “state of opportunity” and implying that helping Vermonters realize those opportunities would be the foundation of his campaign — minus any lofty rhetoric or grand visions.

Editorial: Railways and the law

Posted on August 20, 2015 |
By Angelo S. Lynn

Since the late 1800s and the western expansion of the U.S., railroads have enjoyed a preferential status among businesses. That it continues today, at the expense of communities put in jeopardy by unwanted and sometimes unwise construction projects, is an anomaly that perhaps should be revisited by the state’s Legislature and the U.S. Congress.
