Andy Kirkaldy: Not-so-trivial questions about local sports

By Andy Kirkaldy

It’s time for a pop quiz just to make sure all the sports fans out there (both of you?) have been paying attention. Pull out the No. 2 pencils and put away the smart phones.

Question 1: The Middlebury Union High School boys’ hockey team won Division II championships in 2011 and 1996. What did the title games have in common?

Question 2: Derek Bartlett coached the 2011 Tiger ice hockey championship team. Who was the 1996 coach?

Vergennes council balks at issuing permits to City Limits

VERGENNES — With a memo in hand from Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel detailing three $500 fines assessed to the City Limits Nightclub for allegedly over-serving alcohol to patrons, on Tuesday the city council for a second time decided not to act on the Green Street bar owner’s application for its annual liquor and live entertainment license.

Instead the council chose to invite City Limits owner Brett Ward, who was unavailable to attend this past Tuesday, to its April 24 meeting to discuss the issues Merkel raised.

Panton town hall renovations to begin soon

PANTON — Although some questions remain about the feasibility of a kitchen on the upper level of Panton Town Hall, work that voters approved on Town Meeting Day to improve the 19th-century structure will soon begin.

Overall plans call for making town hall’s two bathrooms handicap-accessible, replacing the handicap ramp, adding the kitchen, and installing a newly built, low-maintenance cupola to replace the deteriorated cupola that was removed in 2011.

VERGENNES — In a cold and toward the end rainy high school baseball game on Friday, visiting Middlebury got a near no-hitter from junior Wyatt Cameron to get past Vergennes, 6-3, in an event in which the spring elements played a role.

Not only did the cold and wet conditions factor directly, but also the teams had barely been outside gymnasiums and hockey rinks to practice tracking fly balls and bouncing grounders before last week’s opening games.

The Tigers knocked out eight hits off losing pitcher Ema Gernander, including three by Ashley Sunderland, a homer by Kyra Roberts, and a double by winning pitcher Bridget Audet. Audet struck out nine and allowed four hits and one walk.

Mediation set to resolve Ferrisburgh dispute over clear-cut trees

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh town officials, the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm LLP, and representatives of both parties will sit down on April 27 with Middlebury mediator Michael Marks and try to resolve the dispute that arose when the farm a year ago hired a contractor to clear-cut trees and brush from a three-quarter stretch of Arnold Bay Road.

Ferrisburgh selectboard Chairman Rick Ebel earlier this week confirmed the meeting had been scheduled and said he hoped the process could produce a resolution with which both sides could be happy.

NEW HAVEN — One of the most talented athletes in Mount Abraham Union High School history found her calling, she said, because she lacks an athletic skill.

Mount Abe senior Lydia Pitts recalled as a 7th-grader at the Bristol high school she wanted to play a spring sport. Softball, girls’ lacrosse, and track and field were offered.

Pitts, a New Haven resident, chose track and field. Why?

Ferrisburgh dog rescuer faces sanctions; witness brings rat to selectboard meeting

FERRISBURGH — As voices grew louder and one Sand Road neighbor accused another of lying at the April 3 Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting, Board Chairman Rick Ebel had already warned that he would call a recess to calm things down before another resident held up a dead rat in a freezer bag.

At that point Ebel — and probably many of the 30 residents at the meeting— had seen enough.
