VERGENNES — In an unexpected and unprecedented move, two-time Vergennes Mayor Michael Daniels resigned on Thursday, alleging in a statement a poor working relationship with the Vergennes City Council and citing a disagreement with council members on how a recent complaint against city hall employees was handled.

“I was told right at the beginning by several council members that we are all equal; stop running out in front and work with the council. I will no longer be a puppet,” read one sentence in Daniels’ statement.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh selectboard Chairwoman Loretta Lawrence said last week that the owners of the Vorsteveld Farm have accepted the town’s offer of mediation as a way to resolve the dispute over whether the farm had the right to clear-cut trees and shrubs this past spring in the town right-of-way along Arnold Bay Road’s east side.

The selectboard met behind closed doors on Tuesday, Feb. 6, and Lawrence confirmed on Wednesday the board discussed the Vorstevelds’ acceptance of the board’s offer of mediation.

PANTON — Panton residents will make key decisions about the future of their town hall in March — but they won’t make them in town hall, and one decision will have to wait for another day.

Panton selectboard Chairman Howard Hall said the board recently decided to hold town meeting at a site that is “an officially ADA-qualified location.”

VERGENNES — All signs pointed to a tight boys’ basketball game at Vergennes Union High School on Thursday.

Mount Abraham came in at 5-8, and the Commodores at 3-7. The Eagles lost at Middlebury, but the Commodores recently won there.

And the Commodores had home-court advantage: Their fans filled most of the packed bleachers in the school’s middle school gym, where the game was played due to repairs in the main gym.

FERRISBURGH — A couple months back volunteers at Ferrisburgh’s Rokeby Museum were going through the historic landmark’s outbuildings, evaluating them for possible conservation work or repairs, when they made a discovery — a small, painted wooden boat, just short of six feet long and in rough shape.

A more perfect match of treasure hunters and bounty would be hard to imagine.

VERGENNES — One of the three wins earned by a young Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team this winter came back on Jan. 10, when the Commodores erased host Middlebury’s eight-point fourth-quarter lead to stun the Tigers, 34-31.

That game represented a low-water mark for the Tigers, who dropped to 0-6, and a high-water mark for the Commodores, who improved to 3-3.

Entering Tuesday’s rematch at VUHS the Tigers had won five of six, while the Commodores had failed to win again.

Two more wrestlers, Otter Valley’s Josh Beayon and Mount Abe’s Kevin Pearsall, joined Davio in finishing second in their weight classes.

Andy Kirklady: Eagles were the smarter team on Super Sunday

Posted on February 7, 2018 |
By Andy Kirkaldy

The first thing that needs be said about Sunday’s Super Bowl is congratulations to the Philadelphia Eagles and their fans.

As a former long-suffering Boston sports fan I know how those folks in Philly feel to see the end of a long drought: Iggles supporters, please enjoy the moment.

Second, the Eagles deserved to win what was an entertaining game. Usually the Patriots prevail, and deserve to do so, because they are the smarter, better-prepared team that makes fewer mistakes and better decisions.

VERGENNES — The Bixby Library is about to embark on almost a quarter-million dollars of renovations, repairs and reconfigurations that its board members and director think will not only help preserve the Vergennes landmark, but also enhance the library’s ability to meet the needs of the five communities it serves.

Board members said funding for what will in fact be three separate projects will come from the library’s maintenance endowment, grants, donations, and the sale of tax credits.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh offers the only major contested race for office among the communities that make up the Addison Northwest School District. But in addition to weighing in on the usual selectboard budget proposals and a $21.1 million school-spending plan, on Town Meeting Day residents of Vergennes and the four towns will be facing questions about fire and highway trucks and town hall repairs.
