NEW HAVEN — One of the most talented athletes in Mount Abraham Union High School history found her calling, she said, because she lacks an athletic skill.

Mount Abe senior Lydia Pitts recalled as a 7th-grader at the Bristol high school she wanted to play a spring sport. Softball, girls’ lacrosse, and track and field were offered.

Pitts, a New Haven resident, chose track and field. Why?

FERRISBURGH — As voices grew louder and one Sand Road neighbor accused another of lying at the April 3 Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting, Board Chairman Rick Ebel had already warned that he would call a recess to calm things down before another resident held up a dead rat in a freezer bag.

At that point Ebel — and probably many of the 30 residents at the meeting— had seen enough.

MIDDLEBURY — Sometimes statistics do tell the story. Case in point: On Saturday, visiting Amherst won 26 of 32 faceoffs against the Middlebury College men’s lacrosse team.

Those extra possessions translated into a 54-37 advantage in shots and eventually into an 18-11 victory for the Mammoths, who broke open a tight game by scoring seven of the final eight goals.

Amherst, ranked No. 7 in NCAA Division III, avenged its upset loss to the Panthers in the 2017 NESCAC playoffs and improved to 8-1, 4-0 in league play.

VERGENNES — City Manager Mel Hawley at Tuesday’s Vergennes City Council meeting read a 600-word statement addressing the December complaint filed against him by a downtown business owner.

The statement, technically a memorandum addressed to the council, detailed why Hawley believed his specific actions outlined in the complaint — such as copying City Clerk Joan Devine with email correspondence and making sure that a privately organized effort to install holiday lights on the city green was properly insured — were appropriate.
