FERRISBURGH — In addition to hearing from Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler, the Ferrisburgh selectboard heard about a possible solution to a recent complaint about dangerous driving in town.

Board chairman Steve Gutowski said that road foreman John Bull was going to install warning signs on a knoll on Plank Road between South Middlebrook and Pea Ridge roads. Residents on Nov. 17 complained the spot was dangerous because of speeding drivers and limited visibility.

FERRISBURGH — Two weeks after Vergennes officials met with the Ferrisburgh selectboard to discuss providing city police service to the town, on Tuesday Addison County Sheriff Don Keeler told the board he believed his department could do the same job for less money.

Keeler also said he wished the board had contacted him previously to clear up its questions about his department’s performance in speed control and willingness to work nights.

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials have scheduled community forums in Addison and Ferrisburgh to explain to and get feedback from residents about the district’s effort to unify under Vermont’s new education law, Act 46.

Act 46, made law this past spring, offers financial benefits to school districts — and their taxpayers — that unify their governance under one common school board before this coming July.

Otter scorer tops the Independent's field hockey all-star team

ADDISON COUNTY — This fall an undermanned Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team scrapped all the way to a Division II title. All the Otters deserve tremendous credit, especially considering how few subs Coach Stacey Edmunds-Brickell had to deploy.

But it’s hard to imagine the 12-2-3 Otters claiming that crown without the player who scored roughly two-thirds of the team’s goals, the Addison Independent Player of the Year, junior Allison Lowell.

Sports Column by Andy Kirkaldy: Panthers, locals excel at exciting sport with sticks

It’s funny, field hockey has a reputation as a sport that is constantly being interrupted by whistles.

I thought of that on Sunday afternoon while I sat in front of my computer and watched the Middlebury College team battle Bowdoin for the NCAA Division III title and win, 1-0.

Many more were probably glued to televisions watching a sport in which every play begins and ends with a whistle, and the athletes have to gather for a committee meeting before they decide what to do next. Yes, that would be football.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh selectboard will consider during its upcoming budget talks whether to propose spending up to $25,000 a year for 10 hours a week of service from the Vergennes Police Department, board members said at their Nov. 17 meeting.

Board members said they would make the decision to include that or a lesser amount in the 2016-2017 municipal budget after hearing from Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley and Vergennes Police Chief George Merkel about what city police could offer Ferrisburgh.
