Mount Abe girls' hoop final postponed due to weather

BARRE — The Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team’s championship game in Barre was postponed from Tuesday night until Friday night due to the midweek snowstorm.

The 19-4 Eagles, seeded No. 2, will meet No. 1 Fair Haven (20-3) on Friday at 8:15 p.m. in the Barre Civic Auditorium.

The game is a rematch of one the Eagles won at Fair Haven, 33-29, on Dec. 28.

Addison Northwest voters OK $7.6M school bond

VERGENNES — Addison Northwest School District residents on Tuesday showed solid support for a $7.63 million bond to energy-efficiency, security, safety and kitchen improvements to the four district schools, with most of the spending devoted to Vergennes Union High School.

The final tally was 987-515, or 65.7 to 34.3 percent. Residents in five ANWSD communities supported the proposal.

ANWSD Board Chairwoman Sue Rakowski said board members and administrators were pleased to see such strong backing for the proposed work.

Eagle girls top Raiders, to play Slaters for title

BARRE — In Saturday’s Division II girls’ basketball semifinal No. 2 Mount Abraham Union High School and No. 3 U-32 traded runs all game long.

But the Eagles struck first, taking a 17-4 lead after one quarter, and last, closing the fourth period with an 18-1 surge over the final 4:30 to win, 55-37, and answered the 19-4 Raiders’ final push.

U-32 fought back to within 39-34 after trailing by 14 midway through the third period, holding the Eagles scoreless for the first 3:30 of the fourth quarter.

OV boys top Solons, earn a trip to Barre

MONTPELIER — The Otter Valley Union High School boys’ basketball team stayed hot on Friday, when the No. 5 Otters started fast and then held off host No. 4 Montpelier, 49-46, in a Division II quarterfinal.

The 15-7 Otters, winners of nine of their past 10 games, were rewarded with a berth in Monday’s semifinal at 8:15 p.m. against a familiar foe: No. 1 Fair Haven.

The 17-5 Slaters defeated OV twice this season, 63-50 in Fair Haven and 60-52 in Brandon. That second setback came on Feb. 14 and was the last time the Otters lost a game.

Upgrades coming to Panton's town hall

PANTON — With a backhoe humming away in the background and after a series of contested votes and lively discussions, about 30 residents at Panton’s Town Meeting on Tuesday morning backed several measures to improve and restore Panton Town Hall, which sat about a mile-and-a-half west of their meeting place, Panton’s town garage.

City and St. Paul's Church eye sidewalk effort

VERGENNES — At its meeting last Tuesday the Vergennes City Council continued to discuss with St. Paul’s Episcopal Church representatives how much of the tab the city should pick up for a Designated Downtown grant to replace the Park Street sidewalk.

That narrow sidewalk, in only fair condition and barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side, runs past the city bandstand on one side and along church property on the other.

Women's hockey nets NESCAC three-peat

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team this past weekend continued its winter-long dominance of its NESCAC foes, winning twice on its home ice to claim its third straight league playoff title.

Sunday’s 2-0 win over Amherst in the championship game and 2-1 decision over Bowdoin in the semifinal pushed the 20-4-3 Panthers’ record against NESCAC foes this winter to 16-1-2, including a 15-game unbeaten string in league play that they extended with the two victories.

Former Vergennes alderman David Austin returns to city council

VERGENNES — Former four-term Vergennes City Council member and Planning Commission Chairman David Austin was the pick at last week’s council meeting to become the newest Vergennes alderman.

Austin and another candidate with a long record of public service in Vergennes, Faith Terry, had submitted letters of interest seeking appointment to fill the vacancy created by the February resignation of Mayor Michael Daniels.

Vergennes city manager Hawley gives retirement date

VERGENNES — It will be July 24, said Vergennes City Manager Mel Hawley.

Hawley, 64, whose two tenures as city manager total more than three decades, had informed the Vergennes City Council months ago that he would be stepping down no later than August.

At the council’s Feb. 27 meeting Hawley finally pinned down a date — the council’s only meeting in July, which comes on the 24th. Typically he and City Clerk Joan Devine are reappointed at the beginning of the Vergennes fiscal year, which starts in July.

Eagle girls' hoop tops Lamoille, books their trip to Barre

MIDDLEBURY — Seniors Emma Carter and Emma LaRose made the Mount Abraham Union High School girls’ basketball team in November 2014.

Seniors Emma Radler and Abby Mansfield and junior Jalen Cook came aboard a year later, and senior Vanessa Dykstra joined in the 2016 preseason.

Those six were the first six Eagles to enter Saturday’s Division II quarterfinal, in which No. 2 Mount Abe turned back an early challenge from No. 10 Lamoille in a 51-32 victory.
