VERGENNES — Given that the Vergennes Union High School girls’ basketball team features only two seniors on its roster, Coach Billy Waller says a major concern is that the Commodores show progress.

After Friday night’s home game vs. Missisquoi, Waller can probably put a check mark in that box.

After spotting the T-Birds the opening hoop, the Commodores erupted for a 16-0 run that featured crisp ball movement, balanced scoring and tough defense.

VERGENNES — After listening to the second overflow crowd in the Vergennes Union High School library in six days, the VUHS board on Monday adopted a roughly $9.73 million spending proposal for the 2014-2015 school year that, including an extra $50,000 to start a capital improvement fund, would boost spending by about 3 percent.

FERRISBURGH — The Ferrisburgh Central School board last week adopted a budget proposal for the 2014-2015 school year that calls for a spending increase of almost 11 percent to $3.62 million and adds a new teacher — one not recommended by administrators — to help handle a large blended 5th- and 6th-grade class.

MIDDLEBURY — A Middlebury College women’s basketball team with a lineup finally looking more like what the Panthers hoped for surged to open Tuesday’s second half on the way to a 65-58 victory over visiting Colby-Sawyer.

The game marked only the second game this season that last season’s leading rebounder, senior forward Katie Pett, and second-leading scorer and rebounder, Scarlett Kirk, had taken the floor together.

VUHS seeks to close $1 million budget gap

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union High School board is looking at a budget draft that if adopted as it stands could, according to Addison Northwest Supervisory Union officials, trigger a 20-percent hike in the VUHS portion of the property tax rates in the five ANwSU towns.

Around 100 students, residents and teachers attended a Wednesday VUHS board meeting at which board members wrestled with a preliminary budget draft that could boost school spending next year by about 5 percent to almost $10 million, not including a separate $100,000 Capital Improvements Fund.

VERGENNES — The Vergennes Union Elementary School board ended a budget workshop meeting last week eyeing a $4.26 million 2014-2015 budget that would increase spending by 4.34 percent, or $177,000.

However, almost all of that increase is driven by a state-mandated change in the way special education is accounted for within the Addison Northwest Supervisory Union schools and in higher special education costs overall, said ANwSU Superintendent Tom O’Brien and business manager Kathy Cannon.

VERGENNES — The proposal to convert the former Vergennes nursing home at 1 Alden Place into a treatment center for troubled teen girls and young women has hit a major snag — a dispute between the property’s seller and its contracted buyer.

The sale of the former Briarwood Nursing Home to Valley Vista, which operates a 10-year-old, 80-bed substance-abuse treatment center in Bradford, is either off or on hold, according to versions offered by building owner John Laberge or Valley Vista co-owner Rick DiStefano.
