MUHS gymnasts host St. Johnsbury

MIDDLEBURY — Visiting St. Johnsbury defeated the Middlebury Union High School gymnastics team on Dec. 28, 106.2-98.1.

Highlighting the Tigers’ efforts were Olivia Beauchamp, who won on the beam, and Laura Whitley, who finished in the top three in four events.

The top three in each event were:

Vault: 1. Emma Stelzner (St. J), 8.4; 2. Molly Young (St. J), 8.0; 3. Hannah Parker (St. J), 7.8.

Bars: 1. Stelzner (St. J), 7.75; 2. Young (St. J), 5.9; 3. Whitley, 5.85.

Panther men's basketball loses its first games of the season

LEXINGTON, Va. — The Middlebury College men’s basketball team in recent action suffered its first two losses of the winter, both to ranked teams. The Panthers split a pair of games at Washington & Lee’s four-team holiday tournament this past weekend before returning home to lose another non-league contest, a result that snapped the program’s 18-game home winning streak.

Middlebury men's hockey claims tourney title

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s hockey team opened second-semester play this past weekend by winning twice, including in the championship game defeating Oswego, ranked No. 3 in NCAA Division III, to take the title of the Panthers’ own Middlebury Holiday Classic.

The 3-7 Panthers return to action this coming weekend, when they host league foes Wesleyan on Friday at 7 p.m. and Trinity on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Boys' hoop roundup: MUHS & Mt. Abe post wins

ADDISON COUNTY — In local high school boys’ basketball late last week, Middlebury broke into the win column and Mount Abraham reached .500, while Otter Valley and Vergennes dropped road contests.

TIGERS

On Dec. 27 the Tigers picked up their first win by defeating visiting Colchester, 65-58. The Tigers ran to a 38-20 lead at the break and stymied the Lakers’ attempt at a rally. Cody Pomainville (15 points) and Parker Beatty (10) led a balanced MUHS attack.

College women's basketball splits two games

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Middlebury College women’s basketball team split two games on a weekend trip to California and will enter league play this weekend with a 9-2 record. The Panthers will host Connecticut at 7 p.m. on Friday and Wesleyan at 3 p.m. on Saturday.

On Dec. 29 host Claremont-Mudd-Scripps edged the Panthers, 54-53, when CMS’s Corinne Bogle beat the buzzer with a floater in the lane. CMS improved to 8-2.

Panthers rallied in the second quarter to lead at the break, 32-29, and stretched the lead to 45-39 entering the final period.

Vermont State Police Log: Addison man seriously hurt in snowmobile crash

ADDISON COUNTY — An Addison man was reported to be in serious condition at University of Vermont Medical Center on Tuesday — six days after he was injured in a snowmobiling accident near Dead Creek.

On Wednesday, Dec. 27, at around 4 p.m. Vermont State Police raced to the Dead Creek Fish and Wildlife Access off Route 17 in Addison for a report of an unresponsive man on the ice. Troopers found that 40-year-old Timothy Oemcke had crashed his Arctic Cat Crossfire 7 snowmobile on the access road. Police report that he was wearing a DOT-certified helmet at the time.

Vergennes Police Log: Christmas week proves routine for city police

VERGENNES — In a week during which Vergennes police busted the youths who allegedly stole items from as many as 14 cars on Christmas Eve and Christmas morning and damaged another four vehicles (see story in A section), they also handled a number of somewhat more routine items.

Between Dec. 25 and 31, Vergennes police also:

•  On Dec. 25 helped vehicle owners get into their locked vehicles on Meadow Lane and Main Street.

•  On Dec. 26 helped a vehicle owner get into a locked vehicle on South Water Street.

Middlebury Police Log: Police look into sexual assault complaint

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police received a complaint of a sexual assault stemming from an alleged incident at a South Pleasant Street residence on Dec. 27. Local police referred the case to the Addison County Unit for Special Investigations.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Investigated a death at a Route 7 North residence on Dec. 25. Police said April Duclos, 43, had died from natural causes.

•  Helped Middlebury Regional EMS with a woman on Water Street who had expressed a desire to harm herself on Dec. 26.

Top 10, No. 1: Feds seek Lake Champlain cleanup cuts; state pushes back

Everybody uses it, but it’s often taken for granted.

Water.

And Vermont’s water made a lot of headlines in 2017 as lawmakers — amid steady pressure from the U.S.  Environmental Protection Agency — continued to discuss an action plan to clean up the state’s waterways, with the focus primarily on Lake Champlain.
