Police chase suspect in lawn mower theft

MIDDLEBURY / NEW HAVEN — Several police agencies combined captured a man who allegedly drove away from a Middlebury store without paying for a lawn mower last week.

Michael Francis, 56, of Colchester reportedly stole a push mower from in front of the Sears store on Exchange Street around 3 p.m. on Tuesday, May 16.

Middlebury police allege Francis loaded the mower into a 2005 Ford Explorer and then sped off.

Middlebury College admits record number of students of color; admission-acceptance rates highest in years

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College will welcome one of its largest incoming classes in years this fall following a stronger-than-usual response from this year’s admitted students. As of May 1, when admitted students were required to inform the college of their decision, 644 students said they planned to enroll in September, with another 107 in February, for a total of 751.

Vergennes-area youths selected for Girls' State

VERGENNES — The American Legion Auxiliary Department of Vermont and Unit 14 of Vergennes will sponsor seven junior girls as delegates to Vermont Girls’ State, June 17-June 22, at Vermont Technical College in Randolph, Vermont.

Selectees include Ally Atkins, Anneke Boelens, Norah Deming, Peighton Duprey, Nora Hatch, and Anya Sonwaldt, from Vergennes Union High School and Kristin DeGraaf who is attending Rice Memorial High School.

D-Day vet to lead Memorial Day parade in Vergennes

VERGENNES — American Legion Post 14 has chosen Ron Hadley of Middlebury as the grand marshal of the Vergennes Memorial Day Parade this year. Hadley joined the U.S. Navy in the midst of World War II, completed his training in the fall of 1943, and then served all over the world before rounding out his duty in June 1946. He gave this account of his war service:

My war experiences started with my assignment as a junior officer (ensign) to an attack transport ship destined for the invasion of Normandy. Our cargo was 900 Army men and 20 landing craft.

Infinitus, longest trail race in state, offers races from 8K to 5,518 mile in Goshen

GOSHEN — The longest trail race in the state, the third Infinitus 888K (551.8-mile) starts on May 18, 8:08 a.m., and gives runners 10 days to complete laps in the wilds of the Moosalamoo National Recreation Area. Based out of Blueberry Hill Inn in Goshen, the weeklong event gives lesser mortals a chance to run the trails of the Moosalamoo with an 8k, 80k, marathon, 100-mile or 250-mile options. In 2015 and 2016, only one person finished the 888k. Plenty more tried.

City's Memorial Day theme: 'Service, Honor, Sacrifice'

VERGENNES — Memorial Day this year is observed on Monday, May 29. The American Legion Post 14, sponsor of the parade for 50 years, and one of the organizers for 40, has announced that the theme of this year’s Vergennes parade is “Service, Honor, Sacrifice.”

“This is a real community affair,” say Henry Broughton, a member of the Vergennes Memorial Day Committee. The parade attracts as many as 10,000 people each year.

City farmers market starting season at new home

VERGENNES — This summer the Vergennes Farmer’s Market will move to a new site with new hours. Chris and Sandy Reck, the new managers of the market, have set the start of the 2017 summer market on June 1 at its new home at Kennedy Brothers on Main St.

Last summer, Chris, and Sandy started Route 7 Pie Co. as a means to get to know more Vergennes residents. Sales were good and they enjoyed the experience. In part because of their success, Chris and Sandy were approached to start an indoor winter farmer’s market at Kennedy Brothers.

A casual afternoon conversation about painting with artist Joe Bolger can leave you with the knowledge most cannot gain in a semester enrolled in a traditional painting course. His constant desire to learn from inspiring artists drove him to read, reread, dog-ear, and underline all of their writings. He immersed himself in these books until the concepts were part of his own process and understanding. His passion for creating these visions from figures and portraits, to landscapes is the true force behind his genius.

Salisbury hosts walk to school day on June 6

SALISBURY — Salisbury Community School will be holding a special Walk to School Day on Tuesday, June 6. Kelley Cross Road will be closed to through traffic by order of the town Selectboard so that students can walk the half-mile to school from either Holman Road or West Salisbury Road.

The event is being organized by science teacher Amy Clapp and her fifth grade Green Team, with support from the Vermont Energy Education Program. It will conclude a month-long study of natural resources and human impact on the environment for the school’s K-6 students.
