Vergennes Police Log: Found bag held empty bottles and more

VERGENNES — Vergennes police are hoping to return a bag found in the lobby of a local bank on March 2 to its owner. Police said the contents of the bag included uniform pants, two bottles of nearly empty Canadian LTD whiskey, and an Alcoholics Anonymous schedule. They are holding the found property at the city’s North Main Street police station.

Vermont State Police Log: Object thrown at school bus breaks window

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are trying to find out who threw a heavy object at a school bus full of kids and broke a bus window in Starksboro last week.

On Tuesday, Feb. 28, at approximately 3:45 p.m., a Bet-Cha Transit school bus was transporting children home from school on Big Hollow Road near the Hillside Manor trailer park in Starksboro when an object broke through one of the side windows on the bus causing it to break. Police found that the object, a large marble-size ball.

Middlebury Police Log: Middlebury man defrauded in phone scam

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police on March 1 interviewed a local resident who had apparently been victimized in a recent phone scam.

Police said the victim received a call from a person purporting to represent a company able to retrieve funds the victim had lost in a time-share scam. The victim was told she could get back her money, plus a $5,000 settlement; all she had to do was pay a 33-percent fee.

Bristol Police Log: Woman cited for DUI after failing sobriety tests

BRISTOL — On the evening of Saturday, Feb. 18, Bristol police arrested Dale Alice Vanleuven, 56, of Bristol and cited her for driving under the influence on Feb. 18.

At 6:57 p.m. an officer observed a traffic violation on Main Street and stopped the vehicle. The officer noted signs of impairment, administered field sobriety exercises and established probable cause to support an arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol. A preliminary roadside breath test at 7:12 p.m. showed a blood alcohol content of 0.167 percent; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.

ADDISON — In Australian balloting on March 7 Addison residents supported the municipal spending proposal. There were no contested races on Addison’s Town Meeting Day ballot.

Incumbent Selectmen Rob Hunt and Peter Briggs and Water Commissioner Steve Kayhart all won election without opposition, as did two listers and one auditor and a number of other officers.

BRANDON — All the items on the Brandon town meeting ballot were approved, including the $2,999,986 municipal budget, which earned 437 yes votes to 199 no votes. The amount to be raised by taxes to cover that budget is $2,559,066, which represents a 1.1 percent decrease, from 94.37 cents to 93.43 cents per $100 of property value.

Voter turnout was dismally low, with just 651 people voting out of 2,897, or roughly 22 percent.

BRIDPORT — Bridport residents at their town meeting Tuesday decided two contested races for their local selectboard and passed all money items on their ballot.

Tim Howlett narrowly won a three-way race for a two-year term on the selectboard. He prevailed with 83 votes, over David Bronson (79) and Michael Lawton (66). Howlett replaces Marian Walker, who did not seek re-election.

Meanwhile, challenger Matthew Lawton easily topped incumbent Jerry Forbes, 171-52, for a three-year term as selectman.

BRISTOL — Town Meeting Day in Bristol saw selectboard Chair Michelle Perlee retain her seat against challenger Lance Laliberte, approval of nearly $2 million in town spending and Bristol residents OK’d revised zoning regulations that were five years in the making. Sidewalk repair and school board salaries were the focus of the most discussion on the floor of town meeting Monday evening at Holley Hall.

Cornwall

CORNWALL — Cornwall residents approved all of the articles on their town meeting warning, without a lot of discussion or fanfare.

At Monday night’s town meeting, residents OK’d by voice vote a fiscal year 2018 general fund budget of $454,249, which was down from the $$460,946 passed last year. The proposed highway budget of $400,950 — slightly less that the $403,050 that voters authorized for the current year — also passed easily. Combined, the budgets represent a 1.9-percent reduction compared to this year.

FERRISBURGH — Ferrisburgh residents on Tuesday chose a new selectman and treasurer, returned their town clerk and another selectman to office, and supported the first-ever Addison Northwest School District budget, which passed overall.

At Saturday’s town meeting, town residents approved selectboard spending proposals — with two amendments — that included the purchase of a new, fully equipped $190,000 tandem dump truck.
