College to host 'Sister-to-Sister' summit

MIDDLEBURY — “Sister-to-Sister” is hosting its thirteenth summit for middle school girls on Saturday, Nov. 11 from 9:00 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Middlebury College’s Kirk Alumni Center. “Sister-to-Sister” brings together middle school girls from Bristol, Middlebury and Vergennes with female Middlebury College students.

Shoreham farm family receives organic honors

SHOREHAM — Each year, Horizon Organic announces the recipients of its Horizon Organic Producer Education (HOPE) Award, which recognizes farmers who advocate for organic agriculture and dairying. At the Farm Aid festival in Pittsburgh recently, Joe and Kathleen Hescock of Elysian Fields in Shoreham received a 2017 HOPE Award honorable mention.

Area 4-Hers do well at regionals: Addison County delegation competed at Eastern States

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — Vermont 4-H sheep members held their own in regional competition at Eastern States Exposition, Sept. 29-Oct. 1, in West Springfield, Mass.

The Vermont delegation included Jarod Bushey of Addison; Charlotte and Rebecca Moriarty, both from Jericho; and Riley Ochs of Orwell. They participated in the sheep show and comprised the four-member Vermont quiz bowl team that captured first place in competition.

Tiger football falls to BFA-St. Albans in last game

ST. ALBANS — The Middlebury Union High School football team’s season came to an end on Friday, when the No. 5 Tigers fell to host No. 4 BFA-St. Albans, 34-20, in a Division I quarterfinal.

The 5-4 Tigers drew first blood on a 15-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cody Pomainville to Zach Dunn that made it 6-0.

But the 7-2 Bobwhites responded with the next 20 points to lead by 20-6 at the half: a 42-yard Griffin Knapp touchdown run, two 31-yard Kam Dunsmore field goals, and quarterback Nate Laughlin’s 41-yard touchdown to Mark Howrigan.

2017 Chamber of Commerce Award recipients honored in Vergennes

VERGENNES — Kennedy Brothers, Sweet Charity and Swift House Inn owner Dan Brown received top honors at the annual meeting of the Addison County Chamber of Commerce Tuesday night at the Vergennes Opera House. The event drew a crowd of about 70 for dinner, silent auction and the awards presentations.

Kennedy Brothers received the 2017 Business of the Year Award, which recognizes businesses that have grown, sometimes despite adversity, while providing excellent products or services while doing well by their employees and the community.

Organizers of new Bristol Trail Network celebrate accomplishments

BRISTOL — The group building a trail around Bristol hosted a party at the Bristol Recreation Club pavilion on Oct. 14 to celebrate the progress made this year toward completing the project.

The 24 people who attended walked the section of trail behind Mount Abraham Union High School with amazing views to the west, and then had a great potluck lunch.

Saturday is Take Back Day for prescription drugs

NEW HAVEN — The United Way of Addison County and the Drug Enforcement Administration will give the public its 14th opportunity in seven years to prevent pill abuse and theft by ridding their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. Anyone wishing to participate can bring their pills for disposal to the New Haven state police barracks on Route 7 on Saturday, Oct. 28, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked. (Note that the DEA cannot accept liquids or needles or sharps — only pills or patches).
