Take a journey to the Big Band era this weekend with LC Jazz

The Vergennes Opera House is not hosting a performance this Saturday evening, it's a journey ? a journey through the history of jazz. It's also a celebration ? celebrating the 25th anniversary of Vergennes-based LC Jazz. This 18-piece classic big band along with actor Christopher Ross will guide the audience from the birth of jazz in New Orleans through the fabulous '50s ? think Sinatra, Bennett and Darin. Show starts at 7:30 p.m.

New Haven's Lincoln Peak earns national 'Winery of the Year' award

NEW HAVEN — After much swishing and spitting, winners were named at the 2016 International Cold Climate Wine Competition last month, and Lincoln Peak Vineyard of New Haven came out on top as “Winery of the Year.”

Out of 365 wines from 64 commercial wineries across the U.S. and Canada, the New Haven vineyard’s wines took home the most medals and awards at the competition in St. Paul, Minn.

“We were awarded one Best in Show, two Double Golds, three Golds, three Silver and two Bronze medals,” said Sara Granstrom, of Lincoln Peak.

Man accused of luring, sexually assault on college campus

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police say a man from Houston, Texas, was involved in a sexual assault on the Middlebury College campus on Monday evening, and they say he may have been involved in other incidents, as well.

On Tuesday, Oct. 18, the Middlebury Police Department arrested 31-year-old Nam Vu Bui on charges of sexual assault and voyeurism following the investigation into an incident that occurred on the Middlebury College campus the previous evening. Bui is not a student at the college.

Middlebury Police Log: Woman cited for vase throwing at hospital

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Molly B. Saunders, 26, of Middlebury for disorderly conduct and unlawful mischief, after she allegedly threw a vase inside Porter Hospital’s Emergency Department on Oct. 13.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

• Warned some Court Street residents about making excessive noise on Oct. 10.

• Were informed of the theft of a phone from a Middlebury College student on Oct. 10.

Vermont State Police Log: Inattentive driving leads to crashes

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police responded to two separate crashes on Wednesday, Oct. 12, in which they say drivers rear-ended the vehicle they were following due to inattentive driving.

The first two-vehicle fender-bender occurred around 4:27 p.m. on Route 7 near the intersection of Route 22A in Ferrisburgh.

Otter field hockey rallies past Patriots

BRANDON — The Otter Valley Union High School field hockey team rallied past visiting Division I foe Mount Anthony on Tuesday, 2-1, to improve to 7-5.

The win moved the defending D-II champion Otters, unofficially, into fourth place in the standings on Tuesday, one point ahead of Mount Abraham.

Each team had two more games before a possible quarterfinal collision that would be a rematch of the 2015 final. The Otters will visit D-I Rutland on Friday and host D-II foe Woodstock on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Girls offered a chance to learn and play ice hockey

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury Amateur Hockey Association (MAHA) is offering two programs to get more kids involved in ice hockey.

The organization this fall will offer a Girls Learn to Play Hockey program to girls who were born between 2003 and 2009.

The goal of the program is for the girls to have fun this winter and create new friendships while also learning a bit of hockey. Over the course of six weeks, Learn to Play Hockey coaches will teach the girls basic skating and hockey skills in a fun, non-travel environment. No experience is required.

Panther field hockey splits NESCAC games

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College field hockey team split two NESCAC games this past weekend and stood at 9-3, 5-3 in the league heading into a Wednesday game at RPI after deadline for the sports section. The Panthers will wrap up their regular season by hosting Bates at noon on Saturday and visiting Williams on Tuesday. Their league record puts them in a five-way tie for third-place, a game behind 6-2 Tufts and a half-game behind 6-3 Amherst in a crowded race.

Tiger runners second, VUHS third at Harwood meet

SOUTH DUXBURY — The Middlebury Union High School boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams each finished second at Saturday’s Harwood Invitational, one spot ahead of runners from Vergennes. The Mount Abraham boys took fourth, while the Eagle girls lacked enough runners to score as a team.

Ross Crowne finished third to lead the Tiger boys, while Spencer Hurlburt was ninth to pace VUHS and Aidan May was 22nd to become the first Eagle boy to cross the finish line.

Middlebury men's soccer wins, ties

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College men’s soccer team earned a home win and a road tie in NESCAC play this past weekend and then won a non-league road game on Tuesday to improve to 9-1-3 and 4-1-3 in the conference. That record is good enough for third place in NESCAC play heading into the Panthers’ final two games, at home on Saturday at 11 a.m. vs. Bates and at Williams on Tuesday. The Panthers are ranked No. 15 in NCAA Division III.
