MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury College will celebrate the inauguration of its new president this weekend with a bang — lots of them, actually, in the form of a fireworks display.

Patton’s investiture on Saturday and Sunday will include an exciting lineup of live music, a provocative series of panel discussions, and a formal ceremony filled with all the pageantry that has come down from the halls of medieval academia to modern institutions of higher learning.

BRISTOL — As merrymakers began arriving for the Bristol Harvest Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26, a group of 14 volunteers with the New Haven River Anglers Association fanned out along Bristol streets on a serious mission.

In groups of twos and threes they stopped at storm drains in the village center, laid down a stencil, and painted a message for anyone who deposits waste — fluids and solids — into the gutters:

“Keep It Clean, Drains To River.”

ADDISON COUNTY — Forty-five years ago, a lone male peregrine falcon spotted at Mt. Pisgah above Lake Willoughby was the last wild falcon left in Vermont. The last. The entire species had been wiped out (technically “extirpated,” not extinct), not only in Vermont, not only in the Northeast, but throughout its entire range east of the Mississippi.

This year, state wildlife biologists reported 44 cliff-nesting pairs producing a record 67 chicks — several in Addison County.

BRISTOL — The superintendent of the Bristol-area school district, David Adams, has gone on leave, and the Addison Northeast Supervisory Union school board has named Assistant Superintendent Catrina DiNapoli to take over his duties while an “acting superintendent” is found.

Adams has drawn fire in the past seven months as voters rejected budget proposals for three of the district’s six schools, the teachers’ union voted no confidence in his leadership and a petition signed by 500 people asked for his resignation.

The 28-foot long, 14-foot wide, 6-foot high steel-and-concrete construction behind Mount Abraham Union High School represents seven years of student initiative, over $12,000 in fundraising and a new generation’s vision of a better, more sustainable world.

From start to finish, the student-led Environmental Action Group planned, built and funded the facility, which was formally opened at a ceremony last Friday.

MIDDLEBURY — Vermont Folklife Center (VFC) founder Jane Beck promised Daisy Turner back in the mid-1980s that she would write a book on Turner’s gripping stories about her family’s odyssey from West Africa, through slavery, to a life of freedom and self sufficiency in the small community of Grafton, Vt.

Now 27 years removed from Daisy Turner’s death at the age of 104, Beck has finally made good on her pledge to her late friend, a master storyteller and the daughter of a slave.
