Small rain gardens can have big impact on lake

MIDDLEBURY — “People keep stopping us and asking questions,” said Lauren Slayton and Justin Willis, the two landscapers planting out the new rain garden in the Riverfront Park at the Marble Works in Middlebury early this month.

Straight down the bank from the park, Otter Creek rushes toward Lake Champlain. Every grain of soil and every drop of water that runs off the Marble Works parking lots and rooftops and into the river contributes its own very small part to the very large problem of Lake Champlain’s phosphorus pollution.

By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — Representatives of the companies proposing a $600 million underground power line that would run through Ferrisburgh told about 20 residents and officials on Thursday they were prepared to pay the town at least $350,000 a year for 20 years on top of an estimated $150,000 a year in local taxes the project would generate.

According to a document displayed at the evening meeting in the town office building’s community center, the companies would also “escalate that payment by a mutually agreed index.”

Jessie5931.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Jessie Raymond has received a lot of positive feedback for “Around the Bend,” her regular humor column that has become a Page 4 staple in the Addison Independent for the past dozen years. It’s pretty common for her to receive column kudos while standing in line at the supermarket or at social events.

But lately, her writing has been garnering loud applause from an audience that has been able to see her words play out on stage.

MIDDLEBURY — It looks like Middlebury dog owners will soon have a two-acre, fenced-off park in which to recreate with their four-legged friends.

Barring unforeseen legal or insurance-related complications, the new dog park will be created on Middlebury College-owned land located near the Middlebury Regional EMS headquarters and Charter House community garden off South Street. A group of local dog owners has been lobbying for a safe, local, off-leash location for their pets to run and play.

ADDISON COUNTY — Parents of very young children and officials at schools around Vermont have an extra wrinkle to consider as they prepare for the 2016-2017 academic year: a state mandate that pre-kindergarten services be offered to eligible students through public schools or private programs.

Act 166, signed into law in 2014, requires all school districts in Vermont to offer 10 hours per week — during the 35 weeks of the academic year — of pre-K education to children ages 3 to 5 who are not in kindergarten.
