MIDDLEBURY — “Tell me a story.”

Four little words repeatedly passed from child to adult since humans learned how to speak.

Those four words will get quite a workout through Oct. 15 at the Henry Sheldon Museum of Vermont History, which is showcasing work from some of the state’s finest authors and illustrators of children’s books.

MIDDLEBURY — Have you ever wondered why the wires in your cell phone are so big and inefficient? No?

Well, it’s something that Middlebury College chemistry student Peter Dykeman-Bermingham has thought about. A lot.

That’s why he’s spent the entire summer tinkering with chemical equations to create synthetic wires that could solve that very problem, and why, this past Thursday, July 27, Dykeman-Bermingham’s work was one of 40 research projects that were on display at Middlebury’s annual Summer Research Symposium.

First baby is coming: When sisters blossom into aunts

My two sisters are — and have always been — my closest allies.

Family works like that, if you’re lucky, and I count myself among the luckiest.

OK, our parents split early in our childhoods and there were some years in there that weren’t all awesome in terms of the “perfect family” ranking, but my sisters and I came out of it stronger, together.

We’re close in age; my younger sister, Elsie, was born almost exactly three years after my older sister, Polly — and I was smack dab in between.

BridgeWork9459.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has determined that a planned $52 million replacement of Middlebury’s two downtown rail bridges will have “no significant impact” on local residents, wildlife and the environment.

That gives the green light for the project to proceed as scheduled next spring.

County firemen earn statewide recognition

ADDISON COUNTY — When a fire destroyed the Blue Spruce Motel in Middlebury on July 12, volunteers from seven area fire departments responded with many firefighters going beyond the call of duty. The Addison County fire service was working like a well-oiled machine to ensure that citizens were safe and property damage was kept to a minimum.

It was this type of selfless hard work that earned four county firefighters from three departments recognition from a statewide organization earlier this month.

BRISTOL — Pete Lossman was among the 70 or so Bristol residents at Monday night’s hearing in Holley Hall on a proposed ordinance to regulate the discharge of firearms in Bristol.

He was among the many who claimed the ordinance would burden responsible gun owners only, while doing nothing to curb the “stupid” behavior of those who lack the common sense to use guns safely.

MIDDLEBURY — Jamie Montague has always been drawn to communities offering an array of environmental and recreational assets — such as spacious parks and rustic walking trails. So landing a job in which she will manage many such assets for the Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) was akin to winning the lottery for Montague.

Montague, 30, succeeds Carl Robinson as executive director of MALT, a nonprofit organization that so far has conserved more than 2,600 acres of land, farms, forests, wetlands and recreational areas in and around Middlebury.

That’s right, free.

MIDDLEBURY — Porter Medical Center nurses and management are trying to hammer out a new contract that could soon affect a larger staff.

As reported in the Addison Independent on July 20, the proposed fiscal year 2018 PMC budget calls for adding seven new registered nurse positions to the current staff of 145. Porter officials believe a bolstered nursing staff would help the organization shave around $2.5 million in what it is currently spending for more costly travellers.
