By Andy Kirkaldy

FERRISBURGH — As voices grew louder and one Sand Road neighbor accused another of lying at the April 3 Ferrisburgh selectboard meeting, Board Chairman Rick Ebel had already warned that he would call a recess to calm things down before another resident held up a dead rat in a freezer bag.

At that point Ebel — and probably many of the 30 residents at the meeting— had seen enough.

Posted on April 9, 2018 |
By Mike Polhamus of VTDigger.org

MONTPELIER — Last Thursday, the Public Utility Commission ordered a comprehensive investigation of the methods and practices used by Vermont Gas Systems in the construction of a 41-mile gas pipeline from Colchester to New Haven and on to Middlebury.

On Wednesday the commission had ordered a delay in the assessment against Vermont Gas of a $25,000 fine that had been recommended by the Department of Public Service, saying that a full investigation of the pipeline should be conducted before determining the amount of the fine.

MUHS math teacher Perry Lessing had a hand in overseeing both groups of competitors.

RIPTON — When he was writing sections of North Branch School’s student-scripted spring play, “Wildflowers, Guns, and Bears, Oh My!” which will be staged this weekend, ninth-grader Oscar Downing never set out to incorporate current events.

“I mostly just write what would be entertaining to the crowd and also what goes with the story,” he said. “But oftentimes what happens is that we notice a parallel between what’s going on with the play and something political, and we’ll put in a line about it.”

This April, Justin Patras celebrates five years as head chef at Park Squeeze in Vergennes. But he’s been working in kitchens much longer than that — 20 years, to be exact.

“I grew up in food,” he said during an interview last month. “Both of my parents cooked, so I was exposed to it at an early age.”

Patras’ mother used to cook for the Black Lantern Inn in Montgomery (where Patras was raised). His father worked as the sous chef at Hotel Jay.

SALISBURY — The Bridport Grange and Addison County Farm Bureau will host a legislative luncheon on April 9 that will focus on the mounting financial challenges for farmers in the Green Mountain State.

But local farmers and lawmakers this past Monday had no interest in waiting a week to vent their frustrations, as they spent the vast majority of the latest legislative breakfast describing the fragile state of a dairy industry beset with surplus product that has reduced milk prices and left more farms on the brink of closing.

SolarArray5745.jpg

BRISTOL — Though widely expected, President Trump’s announcement in January that the United States would impose a tariff on imported solar electric cells and modules has set off alarms in Vermont.

The tariff, which the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) called “a loss for America,” is only the latest in what many say is a series of troubling setbacks for Vermont solar, including recent changes in solar power billing rules (called net metering) and a gradual reduction in federal tax incentives.
