Ken Wheeling back on job in the hospital LEAD.jpg

MONKTON — Back on Feb. 18, at about 6 a.m., calls went out to the Monkton Fire Department, Vergennes Area Rescue Squad and Vermont State Police: A car had gone off Hollow Road in Monkton and hit a tree.

According to state police, the driver had “suffered a medical event” and lost control of his vehicle.

That driver was well-known public servant Ken Wheeling, for 40 years the Monkton town moderator and zoning administrator; he also in recent years handled the zoning job in Ferrisburgh and Waltham.

BRISTOL — Bristol Beverage and Redemption Center is now catching some rays — 24.795 kW worth, to be exact.

With 87 roof-mounted solar panels installed in mid-April (plus two heat pumps), owner Adam LaPerle expects to cut his electricity bill in half and to eliminate the use of propane-based heating in his retail space entirely.

BristolBusinessPark0361.jpg

BRISTOL — The vote next Tuesday, May 10, on the $1.1 million water bond could be a crucial step in Bristol’s 20-year quest to build a business park with the capacity not only to incubate but to retain and grow businesses.

“People in Bristol are really passionate about Bristol,” said planning commission member John Elder. “I think a lot of people are devoted to this town but it needs the shot in the arm that would come with allowing successful businesses to grow. Everybody’s agreed about that for a quarter century.”

NickBeauchamp0224.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Some people become defined by tragedy and are unable to overcome it.

But Nick Beauchamp continues to draw inspiration from the worst night of his life — Sept. 10, 2005. That’s when his dad died in a car crash in New Jersey.

Beauchamp was only 6 years old at the time, but the events will forever be etched in his memory.

“My whole family huddled in the living room, torrents of tears sweeping through the room,” he wrote in an essay about that soul-draining day.

ChuckMiller0357.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Chuck Miller, then a young graduate of the Berklee College of Music, found his professional life at a crossroads in 1968 — one of the most tumultuous years in this nation’s history. Assassins had taken the lives of Martin Luther King Jr. and Robert Kennedy. The U.S. was escalating its military involvement in an increasingly unpopular war in Vietnam.

Miller could have plunged into composing, performing or teaching.

Global events helped him make his decision.

Porter_Group_04revised.jpg

MIDDLEBURY — Some of Porter Medical Center’s busiest providers briefly put down their stethoscopes and high-tech medical equipment on Thursday to collectively wield an over-sized pair of prop scissors. They used it to metaphorically cut the ribbon for the opening of Porter Women’s Health, which combines the talents of providers who previously worked out of Tapestry Midwifery & Women’s Health and Addison Associates in OB/GYN.

MIDDLEBURY — Captain Green Up flew in to Middlebury Union Middle School last Friday, with his signature supersonic boom, to lead the entire MUMS student body, staff and faculty in his never-ending battle for a cleaner, greener, litter-free Vermont.

For the past 33 years, Captain Green Up (together with his close friend and confidant, Peter Brakeley, a mild-mannered middle school social studies teacher) has spearheaded the MUMS Green Up Day effort.
