Teens, Bristol police team up to tackle sexting

BRISTOL — The Bristol Police Department has reached out to some of the county’s top experts on teen behaviors to create an outreach program to counter sexting — the practice of texting naked photos.

Taking the plunge into icy waters? No problem, say dozens of kayakers

BRISTOL — Several dozen kayakers on this past Saturday challenged the lively New Haven River at the Ledges Race, despite freezing temperatures and ice that clung to boulders on the water’s edge.

Race organizer Ryan McCall said the weather didn’t deter the competitors in the annual race down a mile-long stretch of rapids.

Winter homeless shelter closing out helpful season with plans for the future

MIDDLEBURY — The Charter House Coalition (CHC) this week will wrap up another season of its heavily used Middlebury warming shelter, and will now turn its attention to improving the interior of its facility at 27 North Pleasant St. in order to better serve homeless individuals and families during the coming years.

Established in 2005, the CHC is a nonprofit association of local religious groups and individuals who each year donate hundreds of volunteer hours and thousands of dollars to make sure the less fortunate have access to basic necessities.

Vermont Choral Union marks 50 yeas with concert series

Fifty years ago, University of Vermont professor James G. Chapman founded the Vermont Choral Union ? a community-based a cappella choral group. The ensemble of 36 singers is still going strong, now with Middlebury’s Jeff Rehbach at the helm. Rehbach will lead the Vermont Choral Union in three anniversary concerts next week: at the Mahaney Center for the Arts at Middlebury College on Friday, at the McCarthy Recital Hall at St. Michael’s College on Saturday and at the Unitarian Church of Montpelier on Sunday.

Local option taxes yielding big surplus: Middlebury to decide uses for $1 million

MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury officials will ask local residents this year for help in solving a pleasant dilemma:

What to do with almost $1 million in surplus funds generated thus far by Middlebury’s local option taxes.

It was on Town Meeting Day in 2008 that Middlebury residents authorized a 30-year, $16 million bond to fund the Cross Street Bridge project, the centerpiece of which is the span linking Main Street to Court Street over the Otter Creek.

Salisbury biogas-to-energy plan scuttled

MIDDLEBURY — Integrated Energy Solutions (EIS) has pulled the plug on a project that would have extracted energy from cow manure and sent it through a pipeline from Salisbury to Middlebury College.

Dan Smith, president of EIS, confirmed the news during a recent phone interview. He declined to discuss specific reasons for scuttling the already permitted project, but indicated financing has been a major obstacle.

Human Powered Parade to roll through Bristol

BRISTOL — For bike advocate and youth leader Melanie Kessler using human-powered transportation is all about joy.

To celebrate that exuberance and to empower others to create their own human power, the 38-year-old Bristol resident is organizing the first annual Human Powered Parade and Celebration, which will be held May 20 in Bristol.

Kessler describes it as a “possibility parade for all things that roll petroleum free.”

STOWE — Two Addison County restaurants were given top honors at Vermont’s annual Tourism Summit, held last week in Stowe. Ian Huizenga of the Bar Antidote and Hired Hand Brewing Company in Vergennes was named Top Chef, and Middlebury’s Two Brothers Tavern was named 2017 Restaurateur of the Year.

Sports Illustrated journalist to give first-hand account of Olympics

MIDDLEBURY— Veteran Sports Illustrated journalist Alex Wolff will examine the recent history of the World Olympic Games on April 19, at 7:30 p.m. In “Five-Ring Circus: Why We Can’t Live With the Olympics — or Without Them,” Wolff will address the risks and rewards of the Olympic Games, and reflect on covering 10 of them, summer and winter, over 36 years with Sports Illustrated.

The talk, at the Champlain Valley Unitarian Universalist Society at 2 Duane Court, Middlebury, is free and open to the public.
