SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. — Freshman Matt St. Amour scored a career-high 27 points to help the Middlebury College men’s basketball team get past host Skidmore, 89-84, on Saturday, in the Panthers’ final game of the first semester.
The Panthers (6-2) built a comfortable lead late in the game before the Thoroughbreds made it a one-possession game in the final seconds before a Jack Roberts dunk with eight seconds left gave the visitors some breathing room.?

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s hockey team defeated visiting Castleton on Saturday, 5-0, to finish first-semester play at 5-1. The Panthers are ranked No. 2 in NCAA Division III, and their only loss came at the hands of No. 1 Plattsburgh. Castleton fell to 6-4 and saw a three-game winning streak snapped.
Hannah Bielawski scored a goal and set up two others in a four-goal third period, and goalie Madeline Marsh worked the 16-save shutout.
BRISTOL — The Addison Otter Swim team had their first meet of the 2013/14 swim season at the NE UVAC Winter Classic on Dec. 7 and 8 in White River Junction. Ten team members and coach Peter Bicknell attended the event.
Out of the 47 races swum, Otters recorded personal best times in 26.

VERGENNES — Vergennes police issued three citations this past weekend for driving under the influence of alcohol, all to men between the ages of 20 and 22.
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police arrested Robert H. Meacham III, 33, of Cornwall and charged him with first-degree aggravated domestic assault and unlawful restraint, following an investigation in the Route 7 South area on Dec. 5. Police said a woman alleged that Meacham had assaulted her the previous day in Cornwall.
Meacham was lodged that evening at the Marble Valley Correctional Center, according to police.

ADDISON COUNTY — Vermont State Police are investigating the theft of approximately 12 Christmas trees from Green Haven Nursery in New Haven.
The Route 7 business recently had 500 Christmas trees delivered and they reported that approximately 12 were stolen overnight between Dec. 4 and 5. The value of each tree is approximately $40.
The trooper recommended that the property owner use game cameras in an effort to obtain photographic evidence on those stealing the Christmas trees.
MIDDLEBURY — UD-3 school directors will meet on Dec. 18 in hopes of finalizing a 2014-2015 budget for Middlebury Union middle and high schools that currently reflects a 2.8-percent spending increase as well as 3.2 fewer educator positions at MUMS.
