MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury College women’s soccer team picked up a much-needed victory on Tuesday, 1-0 over visiting Plattsburgh.
The Panthers, who reached the NCAA Division III semifinal round a year ago, were coming off a 3-0 NESCAC loss at Connecticut College on Saturday that had dropped them to 2-2, 0-2 in the league. Earlier, they had fallen at home to league foe Amherst, 1-0, after surrendering an own goal while outshooting the Jeffs, 18-6.

ADDISON COUNTY — In recent high school soccer action, the Middlebury Union girls improved to 4-0 for the first time in at least two decades, the Tiger boys broke into the win column, and the Mount Abe girls moved over .500, but the Vergennes and Otter Valley girls and Eagle boys came up short. The VUHS boys were idle earlier this week.
When I moved to Addison County 25 years ago, two of my priorities were finding good local fishing and finding a good local fishing-and-outdoor store. The latter of these proved easier. Vermont Field Sports was already a well-established fixture in Middlebury in the fall of 1989. Dick Phillips opened the store in 1982 with 700 square feet of space in the Red School House building on Route 7 South.

On Sept. 10, Middlebury’s Adam Glaser scored twice and added an assist as Middlebury posted a 4-0 home victory over Norwich, outshooting the Cadets, 22-2.
Middlebury scored 13:43 into play. Glaser set up Luis Echeverria’s first career goal on a give-and-go play that started just outside the Cadet box.
MILTON — Six members of the Sodbusters Horseshoe Club claimed state titles at the Vermont State Horseshoe Pitching Tournament held in Milton this past Saturday and Sunday.
Some familiar names were at the top of the leader board, including Men’s Class A champ Brian Simmons and Women’s Class A champ Debra Brown, who were both undefeated.
