CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Middlebury College men’s tennis team won its NCAA Division III quarterfinal match on Monday, but on Tuesday lost an NCAA semifinal to top-ranked tournament host, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps. Middlebury was making its first appearance in the semifinal round since 2010.
WEST HAVEN — In a night that also featured two Addison County winners, Joey Roberts of Fletcher held off New York’s Jessey Mueller and Middlebury’s Todd Stone in Bond Auto Parts Modified stock car action to win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series season opener at Devil’s Bowl Speedway on Sunday.
MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School girls’ and boys’ tennis teams wrapped up their regular seasons earlier this week, while the Otter Valley girls lost at Rutland. The Otters are scheduled to host Bellows Falls on Thursday in search of their first win.
The Tiger girls lost at Montpelier on Monday, 7-0, but won at U-32 on Tuesday, 6-1, to finish at 9-5.
BRATTLEBORO — Host Brattleboro blanked the Otter Valley Union High School baseball team on Monday, 9-0, after scoring six runs in the first two innings.
The Division I Colonels improved to 8-5, while the D-II Otters dropped to 7-6.
Coach Tim Mitchell said the Colonels made the most of their hits, many of which came with runners in scoring position, and a few OV miscues. Meanwhile, he said, the Otters made contact but couldn’t come up with hits to drive in runs.
ADDISON COUNTY — In recent high school lacrosse action, the Mount Abraham boys split a pair of contests, including a win over Otter Valley; the Middlebury boys won on the road; the MUHS girls split two games; and the Vergennes boys lost a tight contest on the road.

MIDDLEBURY — The Middlebury Union High School baseball team dropped a pair of home games earlier this week and saw its record dip to 6-5.
On Monday, visiting North Country improved to 6-4 with a 7-2 win over the Tigers. Aaron Smith absorbed the pitching loss, while Matt Dunton and Josh Stearns had a pair of hits apiece for MUHS.
On Tuesday, visiting Champlain Valley improved to 10-2 with a 7-1 victory over MUHS. Stearns provided the Tiger highlights with two more hits, including a double.
RUTLAND — The Otter Valley Union High School golf team competed at the Rutland Country Club on Monday, firing a 424 to finish third in a Division II field.
Springfield, with Alex Rumrill shooting a 77 for medalist honors, won with 373. Mill River was right behind at 376.
Ben Jerome led the Otters by shooting 100. Also scoring for OV were Garrett Robin (101), Colin Nicklaw (102) and Joey Scarborough (121).
May 20. I stand wading in the New Haven River. There may be no such thing as a stereotypical Vermont May day. I’ve seen snow squalls as late as Memorial Day, and temperatures in the 80s before the start of turkey season. It can cloud over and rain for a week, and we can see nothing but sunshine for a whole month. Or we can see all four of the above in the span of four days.
