Otter football creams Raiders

EAST MONTPELIER — The Otter Valley Union High School football team on Friday knocked off a challenger for the Division III regular season title and top playoff seed by defeating previously unbeaten host U-32, 55-14.

OV improved to 6-0 with two more games left before the playoffs, while the Raiders dropped to 4-1. The Otters will visit D-II Mount Abraham (2-4) this Saturday and host D-III rival Mill River (4-1) under temporary lights at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17.

Eagle football winning streak comes to an end

BRISTOL — The undefeated Burr & Burton Academy football team on Saturday in Bristol snapped the Mount Abraham/Vergennes squad’s two-game winning streak, 35-8.

Although the Eagles intercepted standout Bulldog quarterback Griffin Stalcup three times, Stalcup still threw for three scores and ran for a fourth as BBA held onto first place in Division II at 6-0. The D-II Eagles dropped to 2-4 and will host another undefeated team this coming Saturday, Otter Valley, the first-place team in D-III.

Tigers, Eagles win in girls' soccer

ADDISON COUNTY — The Middlebury and Mount Abraham union high school girls’ soccer team picked up local rival wins over Vergennes in local games late last week, when during other games the Eagles and Tigers picked up road victories.

Peter Burrows: Beyond the pastoral

We all know the reaction that plays across the countenance of those who visit Vermont, who witness its beauty on a tour of the leaves and leave feeling grateful that places like this still exist. Like many residents that have lived outside the Green Mountains, I, too, came here because I was drawn to the pastoral and the bucolic, and craved a community-rich experience that gave real meaning to life. There is not a day that goes by that I don’t marvel at the land and the people and the seeming balance they make.

ANeSU moves forward on Act 46 district consolidation planning

BRISTOL — The boards for each of the six Addison Northeast Supervisory Union Schools, assembled together at Mount Abraham on Monday evening, took important next steps in the Act 46 unification process.

They decided to create an Act 46 study committee with 15 members: five from Bristol, three each from Monkton and Starksboro, and two each from Lincoln and New Haven.

Middlebury ordinance aims to quiet noisy tenants in college neighborhood

MIDDLEBURY — The town of Middlebury is considering a “public nuisances” ordinance that calls on landlords to police noisy, disruptive tenants that have drawn an increasing number of complaints, particularly in the Weybridge and Shannon street neighborhoods.

The new law has been drafted by the town’s public safety committee and will soon come before the Middlebury selectboard for its review and possible approval. Local residents, including tenants and landlords, will also have a chance to weigh in on the draft.
