News that area middle schools and high schools are facing a student decline of 9-26 percent over the next five years is shocking, but it is not new. Most schools throughout Addison County saw the reduction in their elementary schools many years ago and the changing demographics are just working their way through the educational system.
Two questions rise to the fore: 1) what can be done to reverse declining student populations, and 2) how can our schools adapt to fewer students and still maintain a diverse curriculum that pushes students to excel?

VERGENNES — Although the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has again delayed selecting the next operator of Northlands Job Corps, according to Vermont officials the DOL and the state are close on a new 20-year lease for the MacDonough Drive campus.
It is a deal that might mean that once again Vergennes would be compensated for hosting the program.

WEYBRIDGE — The General Assembly is likely to postpone until next year a controversial bill that many shoreline property owners fear would place greater restrictions on how they will be able to develop their waterfront property.
WEYBRIDGE — Leaders in the Vermont House of Representatives are targeting a May 11 adjournment for the 2013 legislative session, leaving them around three weeks to tackle an ambitious agenda that includes a familiar and emotionally charged issue: whether to give terminally ill Vermonters the authority to take their own lives under a bill called “End of Life Choices.”
BOSTON — Ben Bruno of Middlebury was at the family meeting area about two blocks from the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday when two bombs exploded. The 28-year-old — who had finished the race in 3:03.52, about an hour before the first blast— and his companions were confused when they heard the explosions.
“I didn’t want to assume the worst,” he said. “I hoped for the best — maybe it was a transformer blowing or a car backfiring.
