MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police cited Jerry Hoffman, 23, of Middlebury for assault, after an alleged incident involving another man on Merchants Row on Nov. 28. Police said Hoffman was jailed for lack of bail.

In other action last week, Middlebury police:

•  Checked the welfare of a Munson Road man believed to be suicidal on Nov. 23. Police said the man was OK.

•  Investigated a suspicious fire in the Seymour Street Extension area on Nov. 23. Police said the person in question had been burning wood that had plastic attached to it. Police warned the man, noting that only wood can be burned per the community’s burn ordinance.

•  Located a child who had been reported missing after leaving the Mary Hogan Elementary School on Nov. 24. Police said they located the child safe and sound on the school playground.

•  Responded on Nov. 24 to what police described as a “minor” car accident on Deerfield Lane involving a school bus.

•  Received a report on Nov. 24 about some missing items from the Middlebury Union High School kitchen.

•  Responded to a reported argument between a man and woman off College Street on Nov. 24. Police could not locate the couple.

•  Assisted Middlebury Regional EMS with a suicidal patient in the Water Street area on Nov. 25.

•  Helped resolve a child custody issue in the Court Street Extension area on Nov. 25.

•  Checked on a drunken man on Bakery Lane on Nov. 26 to make sure he was not going to drive.

•  Intervened in a child visitation issue at a Valley View Road home on Nov. 27. Police said they referred the parties to family court.

•  Dealt with what police described as a “drunk, out-of-control man” at Two Brothers Tavern on Main Street on Nov. 27. Police said they ultimately took the man to Rutland for detox services.

•  Responded, with local fire officials, to a report of an electric stove fire in an apartment at The Commons on Buttolph Drive on Nov. 27. Authorities evacuated the senior housing building while the fire department cleared it of substantial smoke. Residents were allowed to return to their apartments after around two hours, according to police.

•  Responded to a reported fight at a storage unit complex on Exchange Street on Nov. 27. Police said the incident turned out to be a verbal, rather than physical, confrontation.
