MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police spent a lot of time in the past week helping drivers who were having difficulty negotiating snow-covered roads.

On the afternoon of Monday, Feb. 2 — the day when local schools were closed due to the blizzard — through the morning of Tuesday, Feb. 3, officers assisted many drivers who had minor crashes or who had slid off roads due to the snow and ice. Roads where these incidents occurred included North Pleasant Street, Route 7 North and South, Munger Street and Route 116. On the 3rd at 12:59 p.m. police looked into a report of a vehicle window smashed on South Street, and determined the damage may have been weather related.

Later in the week, on the afternoon of Feb. 5, police assisted the driver of a tractor-trailer stuck on Route 7 South. And on Sunday evening, at 5:10 p.m., police helped the driver of a vehicle with an ice-covered windshield who ended up with the vehicle in the ditch off Route 7 North. A tow truck pulled the vehicle back onto Route 7.

Middlebury police during the week responded to seven traffic crashes that were serious enough that they resulted in property damage; it wasn’t clear from the police reports if the winter weather played a role in any of them. The Middlebury log reported that those crashes came on Feb. 3 at 8:18 a.m. on Court Street Extension, 1:22 p.m. on Elm Street, and 5:14 p.m. on Cross Street; Feb. 4 at 2:37 p.m. on Court Street; Feb. 5 at 11:19 a.m. on Washington Street; Feb. 6 at 12:18 p.m. on Court Street and 3:42 p.m. on South Main at Academy Street; and Feb. 7 at 1:58 p.m. on Court Street.

In other activity last week, Middlebury police:

•  Inspected and installed one car seat at the Middlebury PD on Feb. 5 and two car seats on Feb. 7.

•  On Feb. 2 at 8:35 a.m. logged a report from an East Main Street resident that two windows were shot with what appears to be a BB gun. Investigation continues.

•  On Feb. 2 at 1:01 p.m. received a report from Monroe Street of a case of identity theft.

•  On Feb. 2 at 1:39 p.m. investigated a report of inappropriate adult/child contact, but found the report unsubstantiated.

•  On Feb. 4 at 9:24 p.m. looked into a report that there was screaming and people running around in an upstairs apartment in a Court Street building. When an officer looked into it the only person in the apartment was the tenant who said he had been watching TV.

•  On Feb. 5 at 6:14 p.m. got a report from a downtown bar that an unknown man had walked out without paying his tab.

•  On Feb. 6 at 1:07 a.m. looked into a tip that a man who had lost his license because of drunk driving was driving south on Court Street. The officer who located the vehicle found it was not being operated by the man with the suspended license.

•  On Feb. 6 at 3:56 a.m. assisted an employee of a Court Street business with a frozen front door lock.

•  On Feb. 6 at 1:56 p.m. got a report that a small bag of marijuana was found on the floor of a North Pleasant Street gas station; but it was unknown who dropped it.

•  On Feb. 6 at 4:09 p.m. investigated a report that a male had offered marijuana to youths on Merchants Row and had made sexual references around a female a couple of weeks prior.

•  On Feb. 6 at 6:11 p.m. responded to a report of a verbal fight between a male and an intoxicated female on Happy Valley Road. Police found that the woman was not intoxicated and had left the home to cool down.

•  On Feb. 6 at 7:05 p.m. checked out a report of excessive noise and a possible verbal fight on South Pleasant Street and found the noise was coming from a child crying about a video game.

•  On Feb. 6 at 7:12 p.m. responded to a report from a father in the Ledgewood Court neighborhood that he had found cigarettes in his son’s backpack and the son was becoming angry about it. The officer gave the youth a ticket for the tobacco violation and the youth said he was going to bed.

•  On Feb. 6 about a half hour later returned to Ledgewood Court where a man had reported that another man had sworn and threatened him regarding parking. The officer was able to resolve the parking issue and restored peace.

•  On Feb. 7 at 6:50 p.m. received a report from MacIntyre Lane regarding an attempted fraud that occurred in Nevada that mentioned a Middlebury address. Police forwarded the case to federal agencies.

•  On Feb. 7 at 9:20 p.m. responded to a 911 call at Porter Hospital in reference to a dispute. Police determined that an elderly and confused patient had been yelling in one of the hallways.

•  On Feb. 7 at 9:34 p.m. looked into a report that a man had been assaulted by being pushed on North Pleasant Street, but after investigating determined no assault had occurred.
