Eleanor Jean Barnes, age 79, North Ferrisburgh
NORTH FERRISBURGH — It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Eleanor “Ellie” Barnes, at her home in North Ferrisburgh, on March 25, 2025. A lifelong resident of Quaker Street, Ellie was born in Charlotte, Vt., July 8, 1945, the daughter of Mitchell and Luella (Peryea) Lavalette.
Ellie graduated from Mount St. Mary’s Academy in Burlington, Vt.
Ellie married Larry Barnes on July 30, 1964. They enjoyed dancing, traveling the backroads of Vermont with a picnic lunch, and spending time with family and friends. They bought land and built a house together, choosing local products even if that meant dragging big stones out of the woods for the fireplace. She always said yes and was up for any adventure.
She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother. She worked with her husband in a family business and cleaned houses for many local folks. She loved to grow and arrange flowers as well arts and crafts. Whatever she touched, she always brought joy.
Ellie and Larry were members of Lady of Mount Carmel in Charlotte, Vt.
She was predeceased by her oldest son, Scott Michael Barnes of North Ferrisburgh.
Left to grieve her loss are her husband and soulmate, Larry; her devoted son, Christopher; granddaughter, Lauryn of Condon, Mont.; and her grandson, Carson Barnes. She has several nieces, nephews and cousins who survive her; as well as her brother, George Lavalette and his wife Patricia of Charlotte; and sister, Mary Lois Lahoue of West Townsend, Mass. She was predeceased by her parents; brothers Gordon Mitchell, Lawrence Paul, Frank Lavelette and wife Sandra of Hinesburg; as well as sisters Martha May Chittenden of Newport News, Va, and Elizabeth Richer and husband Clement of North Ferrisburgh, Vt.
She will be buried at Quaker Cemetery in North Ferrisburgh, Vt. Arrangements made in the care of Stephen C. Gregory and Son Cremation Services in South Burlington, Vt. There will be no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Ellie’s honor to your favorite charity. ◊
