Walter L. Knox, Jr., 82, of Monkton

WALTER L. “PETER” KNOX, JR.

MONKTON — Walter L. Knox Jr. of Monkton, Vt., passed away peacefully at his home on April 5 with family by his side after a brief illness. Walter was 82 years old.

The youngest of eight children, Walter was born at home on Lincoln Hill in Hinesburg, Vt., March 4, 1941, to Walter L. Knox Sr., and Flora (Peters) Knox. He graduated from Hinesburg H.S. in 1959, where he played baseball, basketball, and soccer. This is also where he met his future bride, Shirley.

After high school Walter entered the U.S. Air Force, following in the footsteps of his father and older brothers, who served in WWI and WWII, and was stationed at McGuire AFB, N.J. with the 1611th Civil Engineering Squadron. It was during this time he married Shirley, and his first two children, Ronnie and Brian, were born. After four years of service to his country he was honorably discharged at the rank of Airman First Class.

Following his military service, Walter and Shirley settled in Monkton, where they continued to expand their family and Kimberly, Peter, and Kevin were born. He was a devoted employee of Blodgett Ovens in Burlington, where he worked for 38 years as an electrical technician until his retirement in 2001. Additionally, during this time, he provided for his family with a large garden and raised numerous animals on the small family farm.

He was active with the town as a Little League coach and helped build the Monkton Recreation Park. He was a member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Hinesburg for over 50 years. Walter enjoyed hiking the trails he cut and maintained on their property in Monkton and loved watching his children and grandchildren participate in numerous sports and musical activities.

Walter was predeceased by his parents; infant son, Ronnie; and siblings Alice Zimmer, Vernon Knox, George Knox, Marion Cromie, Jenny Wells, Shirley Van Dyne, and Nancy Trombley. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years Shirley (Meader) Knox; son Brian Knox; daughter Kimberly Knox and her daughter Lindsay; son Peter Knox and wife Jill, and their children Sam and Caleb; and son Kevin Knox and wife JoAnn, and their children Jordyn and Andrew.

With his ready smile and easy humor, Walter will be greatly missed. He was fiercely loyal and loved his family unconditionally.

A graveside service will be held in Hinesburg at a later date when the entire family can gather in Vermont. ◊
