CHARLOTTE — Jane Becker passed away peacefully at Eastview’s Memory Care Unit in Middlebury, Vt. She was born and raised in Plainfield, N.J., by her parents, Albert Isaac Codington and Margaret Virginia Leggett along with her siblings Bill Codington, Virginia Work and Ann Bell.

Photo albums show Jane on her family’s dairy farm in Plainfield, on the back of a tractor with farm hands, in the yard with a handful of kittens, or smiling from the rumble seat of her brother’s car. These pictures capture the inquisitive, loving, independent and hardworking person that our mother became.

Jane was trained as a nurse at Boston Children’s Hospital, where she met and married Harvard medical student David Becker from Hartford, Conn. They raised their four children living in Tokyo, Japan; Durham, N.C.; Coral Gables, Fla.; Weston, Mass.; and Dallas, Texas. Jane worked at Bell Labs, the emergency room of Waltham, Mass., Hospital, and as an occupational health nurse in the Boston area.

Upon retirement she moved to Charlotte, Vt., joyfully embracing all facets of the community and of Vermont living.  She spent her retirement volunteering for organizations including Howard Dean’s campaign, for VPIRG, Bill McKibben’s climate change movement, the food shelf and elder education. She worked at the Charlotte library and gardened and cared lovingly for her home on Thompson Point. Jane cherished a daily swim at Whiskey Bay, and was often seen walking briskly around the shore road no matter how icy the footing or bone chilling the wind.

Jane is survived by her children Marcie, Meredith, Jan and Steven; Marcie Freeman, Brattleboro, Vt.; Jan Becker, Boulder, Colo.; Meredith Moses (husband Peter) Charlotte, Vt.; and Steven Becker (wife Carolyn), Dallas, Texas. She is also survived by her grandchildren Ivy, Roome, and Gwendolyn of Dallas; and John Moses and wife Alison, of Los Angeles, Calif.; and by her former husband David Becker (wife Marylou) Vero Beach, Fla.

Our mother shared with us all her love of the outdoors, appreciation of a quiet lake paddle, joy of a good fireside read at Grant Camps, big enthusiasm for cherry stone clams, and no end to her curiosity and thirst for learning. For that her family and friends will always be thankful for the time we shared with her and miss her world-class smile.

We thank the community of caregivers who made her last phase of life full of friendship and warmth.
