CHARLES G. FOOTE

CORNWALL — On Monday, May 31, 2021, under the caring eyes of their daughter Jessica and faithful dog Adam, Charles Foote left this world to be reunited with his loving wife Claudette.

Charlie was born on September 2, 1950. His younger years were spent on the family farm in Cornwall, Vt. It was during this time, as a member of 4-H and Future Farmers of America, he came to recognize the value of an honest day’s work. After graduating from Middlebury High School, Charlie was drafted into the United States Army where he was proud to serve as part of a heavy artillery crew.

After completing his tour of duty and receiving an honorable discharge, Charlie came back home to Vermont and worked briefly for Carrara’s before returning to the life of a dairy farmer. He worked his own farm with his wife, Claudette, and daughter, Jessica until the late 1990s, at which time he went to work for Clarence Deering. Clarence’s Honor Roll Farm in Bridport, Vt., will forever be Charlie’s “farm away from home.”

To know who Charles Foote really was, you just had to look at his hands. They told the story of his life. Huge and strong, thick skinned and scarred; they were never idle and always willing to help. They were hands that could lift a tree, move a mountain or force any obstinate piece of machinery back into place. Yet they were also hands that nurtured ill animals back to health, gently held newborn rabbits, kittens and calves as well as helped his neighbors and friends. He was a man who gave a hand up to all he met, whether it was with a ride, a meal or a place to stay.

Indeed, Charlie was among those lucky few who are not only bigger and stronger than most but also quicker than most. He was quick of wit, quick of temper, quick to forgive and quick to love. He was truly larger than life and will be forever missed.

“…And so my life must be no different

Just like the crops that I have grown

For I am also God’s child and seed

That at harvest must come home…”

A joint celebration of life for Charlie and his wife Claudette Latreille, who passed last June, will be held on Sunday, June 13, between 1 and 4 p.m., at their home, 406 South Bingham Street, Cornwall.◊
