George Michael Tighe, 87, of Bristol

BRISTOL — On March 4, 2021, George Michael Tighe passed away peacefully of natural causes. George, the son of Irish immigrants, was born on Feb. 18, 1934, in Boston, Mass. He moved to Bristol in 1972.
George is survived by two brothers, Joseph Tighe (and wife Kay) and Thomas Tighe (and wife Mary), who both reside in the Boston area. He was predeceased by his wife, Sandi, and his first wife, Charlotte. He is survived by four daughters, Cindy Kelly, Nancy Barringer, JoAnne Dearborn, and Linda Parker; a son, Paul Tighe; a stepson, Jeff Johnson; a stepdaughter, Willow Wheelock; and many grandchildren.
George spent most of his career as an educator, teaching Latin and English at Bradford Academy (now Oxbow Union High School) and then at Mount Abraham Union High School when it opened in 1968. He retired from there in 1995 and then taught Latin part-time at Champlain Valley Union High School until fully retiring in 2000.
In 2010, George received the Vermont Public Service Award for 34 years of public service. The 2011 Bristol Town Report was dedicated to George for his many years of community service through many elected offices held since 1974. This included being a Bristol Village Trustee (1974-1995), Bristol Town Moderator (1982-2004), and Justice of the Peace beginning in 1982. He was honored as the Grand Marshal of a 4th of July Parade in Bristol as well.
George was an avid baseball fan and enjoyed visiting his daughter and son in Arizona during spring training season.
George was very active at the St. Ambrose Church in Bristol. Services will be held at St. Ambrose Church on Tuesday, March 16, at 11 a.m., (limited seating), and wearing a mask is required. For those who cannot attend in person the funeral services will be recorded and available to watch on the following Friday, March 19, on the Brown-McClay Funeral Home Website.
