Local football teams pick up wins
ADDISON COUNTY — In high school football action this past week the Middlebury, Mount Abraham/Vergennes and Otter Valley teams all won at least once.
Results from games played on Wednesday after the deadline for the print edition will be added to this story online on Thursday.
TIGERS
On Friday, the Tigers outlasted visiting Mill River, 20-12, scoring the final six points of the game in the fourth quarter to seal the win. Quarterbacks Zach Bean (16 of 26 for 118 yards) and Ryan Thomas-Danyow (eight 8 for 18, 125 yards) each tossed TD passes. Bode Rubright (6 catches, 47 yards), and lineman Gabe Cotell (two catches, 12 yards) caught touchdowns, and lineman William Berry caught four balls catches for 103 yards.
Nicolai Luksch (four catches, 46 yards) tacked on field goals of 30 and 31 yards) to account for the rest of the scoring as the Tigers improved to 2-1.
On Wednesday the Tigers got past host Poultney, 27-20, after taking a 27-7 lead late in the third quarter. Tiger defender Flynn Whitcomb sealed the victory with a late interception of Poultney quarterback Taite Capman.
In his two quarters Tiger quarterback Thomas-Danyow completed 23 of his 27 passes for 218 yards, and he and Bean each threw for two touchdowns. Sam Warren caught a pair of scoring passes, and Gabe Dunn and Cotell snagged one apiece.
For Poultney (0-4), Levi Allen completed 10 of 19 passes for 142 yards, and Capman hit 13 of his 26 for 127 yards.
EAGLES
On Sept. 30 the Eagle football team topped Mount Mansfield 47-28, as quarterback Adam Mansfield completed 36 of 62 attempts for 550 yards and seven touchdowns. His favorite targets were Carmelo Miceli (six catches, 138 yards, three TDs), Joey Hemingway (10 catches, 166 yards) and Keaton Rayburn (five catches, 50 yards, TD).
On Friday host Essex rolled to a 50-27 victory over the 1-2 Eagles. The Eagles lost despite racking up almost 500 yards of offense. Mansfield completed 27 of 49 passes for 365 yards and three TDs, but was picked off three times, and Caleb Russell connected on nine of 15 attempts for another 113 yards and a score.
Miceli (eight catches, 148 yards, two TDs), Hemingway (seven catches, 84 yards), Noah Gargano (three catches, 103 yards, TD), Beau Carpenter(seven catches, 62 yards) and Lucas Allen (1-yard TD) led the receivers.
The Eagles were scheduled to host the Burlington/South Burlington cooperative team on Wednesday.
OTTERS
On Saturday the 1-2 Otters broke into the win column with a 32-14 victory over visiting Poultney (0-3). OV led at the half, 12-7, and the pulled away for the big victory.
QB Alex Polli tossed five touchdown passes, two to Dylan Gaboriault and one apiece to Brady Diaz, Richard Lafontaine and Luca Polli. Aiden Blier grabbed a two-point conversion for OV.
On Tuesday the Otters outlasted host Mill River, 36-33, as Polli threw another five TD passes. Catching scores were Blier, Lafontaine, Chant Buggiani and Tucker Babcock. Diaz added a two-point conversion.
OV improved to 2-2 at the expense of the 0-4 Minutemen.
