Robert A. Norton, 96, of Middlebury
MIDDLEBURY — Robert A. Norton, 96, passed away peacefully on Sept. 14, 2020, at the Helen Porter Memory Unit.
Bob was born in 1924 and was raised in Birmingham, Mich. He graduated from New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., and then attended Carleton College. While in college, he enlisted in the Army in 1942 and was transferred to active service in 1944. He served with the 9th Armored Division, 52nd Armored Infantry Battalion. He went ashore at Omaha Beach four months after D-Day and fought in the Ardennes and near Bastogne, Belgium. He was captured by the Germans at the Battle of the Bulge and was imprisoned in a POA prison camp in Germany. He was liberated in May 1945, only 20 years old at the time. After the war, Bob taught at Aurora University and then in several Vermont public schools.
He is predeceased by his parents, Ralph G. Norton and Rika Norton, his sister, Lucy Norton VanDyk and his brother Ralph G. Norton Jr (July 2020). He leaves many nieces and nephews from his brother and sister’s families.
