Middlebury Police Log: Officers look into multiple Rt. 7 thefts
MIDDLEBURY — Middlebury police investigated a burglary on Dec. 28 at the Route 7 South building that houses the Grapevine Grill and the Drop-In Brewery.
Police said the culprit(s) had gotten into the building without forcing their way in. Police offered no details on possible missing merchandise or cash. Vermont State Police and a police dog assisted local authorities at the scene.
In other action last week, Middlebury police:
• Received a report of the alleged theft of prescription medication from the warming shelter on North Pleasant Street on Dec. 23.
• Returned a cell phone to a Washington Street resident on Dec. 23 after it had allegedly been taken.
• Responded to a reported retail theft at Hannaford Supermarket on Dec. 24. Police said the suspect had left upon their arrival and the case remains under investigation.
• Responded, with other public safety officials, to a report of a suicidal man at a Buttolph Drive home on Dec. 24. The man was taken to Porter Hospital.
• Responded to another reported retail theft at Hannaford Supermarket on Dec. 24.
• Served a no-trespass order on a woman at the Charter House Coalition’s warming shelter on North Pleasant Street on Dec. 24.
• Were informed of the theft of Christmas lights from a Brookside Drive property on Dec. 24.
• Issued parking tickets on Dec. 24 to vehicles parked downtown in violation of Middlebury’s winter parking ban.
• Responded to a car-vs.-deer crash on South Street Extension on Dec. 24. Police euthanized the injured deer.
• Responded to a report of a vehicle being driven erratically on Court Street on Dec. 25. Police said they were unable to find the vehicle.
• Assisted Vermont State Police with a reported domestic disturbance off Sheep Farm Road in Weybridge on Dec. 25.
• Assisted in locating the owner of a dog that had been injured after being struck by a vehicle on Route 7 South on Dec. 26.
• Investigated a hit-and-run complaint involving two vehicles in the Kings Row area on Dec. 26.
• Helped Vermont State Police investigate a domestic disturbance on West Shore Road in Salisbury on Dec. 27.
• Responded to a Weybridge Street home on Dec. 27 on a report of a loose dog that had allegedly attacked a pet cat.
• Were informed that someone had stolen “miscellaneous items” from an unlocked office on Merchants Row on Dec. 27. The investigation continues.
• Collected drug paraphernalia from a local store’s trash receptacle and placed it into a bio-hazard collection container for destruction on Dec. 27.
• Received an out-of-state hotline report of a potentially suicidal juvenile in Middlebury on Dec. 27. Unfortunately, the caller was unable to provide the name or specific location of the juvenile.
• Cited Matthew L. Jensen, 25, of Brandon for driving under the influence following a traffic stop on Court Street Extension on Dec. 27. Police said they measured Jensen’s blood-alcohol content at 0.102%; the legal limit for driving is 0.08.
• Cited Brian Bowdish, 33, of Salisbury for drugged driving, after responding (with Middlebury Regional EMS) to a report of a man who had passed out in a locked vehicle parked off Foote Street on Dec. 28. Police sent an evidentiary sample of Bowdish’s blood to the Vermont Forensic Lab for analysis.
• Responded to a report of a disorderly man at the warming shelter on North Pleasant Street on Dec. 28. Police said the man had left upon their arrival.
• Checked on a person in the Court Street Extension area who was threatening self-harm on Dec. 29.
• Responded to a report of a fight in the Jayne Court neighborhood on Dec. 29. The people had left when police arrived.
• Responded to a noise complaint in the Court Street area on Dec. 30.
