Muriel Alta Orvis, 97, of Lincoln

LINCOLN — Muriel Alta (Farr) Orvis died on Dec. 4, 2019, at Vergennes Residential Care Home. Muriel was born on March 18, 1922, to Seymour and Leah Farr. She grew up on Quaker Street and attended school at the Corner School in Lincoln.
Muriel married Gordon Orvis on March 30, 1940, and together they raised three sons in their home on Forge Hill in West Lincoln. Muriel was a homemaker for many years, but when her youngest son could well look out for himself she went to work at Van Raalte and then to Drake & Smith, where she spent 18 years and retired.
Some of her favorite pastimes were sewing, quilting, crocheting and embroidery work. Other things she enjoyed were playing cards, putting puzzles together and doing crossword puzzles. During retirement she liked going on bus tours with her friends and visiting the Maine Coast.
Muriel was a loyal friend to all that she came in contact with, and always reached out to others, whether it was a time of celebration or a time of tragedy, by means of cards, letters or a phone call. Her loyalty was repaid over the years by all her friends, neighbors and relatives that came to visit and spend hours talking with her, which she thoroughly enjoyed.
Survivors of Muriel are her son Dale and his wife Dorothy of New Haven, her daughters-in-law Janet Orvis of Hinesburg and Mary Orvis-Baker of Bristol, her sister Eleanor Thompson of Lincoln, her sister-in-law Barbara Farr of South Starksboro plus many dear nephews, nieces and many close friends and neighbors. Surviving also are nine grandchildren; Michael Orvis, Jeff Baker, Eric Baker, Amy Hill, Rebecca Josselyn, Jonathan Orvis, Caryn Orvis, Kristen Orvis-Salter and Jacob Orvis. Her great-grandchildren include Hannah, Sam, Tony, Doug, Ben, Meredith, Grace, Henry, Marigold and Rachel. And one great-great grandchild, Mike,
Those who predeceased her were her parents, her husband of 37 years Gordon, her eldest son Douglas, her youngest son Bradley, her brothers Rolan and Maynard Farr and her sister Norma Carr.
There will be a Memorial Service at Burnham Hall in Lincoln on Sunday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m., and then there will be light refreshments and an opportunity to share your memories and experiences of Muriel with the family and friends
If you choose, in lieu of flowers, donations could be made to such organizations as the Burnham Hall Fund and the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department. To send online condolences to her family visit brownmcclayfuneralhomes.com.◊
