VERGENNES — During a routine traffic stop on Panton Road, Vergennes police on Nov. 29 arrested a Burlington man wanted in Chittenden County.
Police stopped a car operated by Timothy J. Ely, 63, of Burlington for allegedly speeding on Panton Road and discovered there was an outstanding Chittenden County warrant for his arrest for writing bad checks and embezzlement. Police lodged Ely at the Chittenden Regional Correctional Facility with a cash bail of $5,000, and also issued him a speeding ticket.
In other incidents between Nov. 25 and Dec. 1, Vergennes police:
On Nov. 25:
• Responded to a Main Street report of a small dog being loose and acting in a threatening manner; the complainant said he had confronted the owner of the dog, but police were unable to find the dog or its owner.
• On a traffic detail on Monkton Road saw no violations.
• Put notices on vehicles parked on city streets as a warning for the Dec. 1 beginning of the city’s winter parking ban.
• Issued a $530 ticket to the driver of a tractor-trailer unit on West Main Street for allegedly traveling 65 mph in a 30 mph zone.
On Nov. 26:
• Went to Walker Avenue on behalf of a woman to check on her son, who had been ill, but was found to be OK.
• Issued a subpoena to a resident at the Valley Vista Center on behalf of Chittenden County Superior Court.
• Checked a report of a man said to be looking in parked vehicles on Walker Avenue with a lighter; he denied the activity, and there was no sign of illegal entry of vehicles.
• During a traffic detail on West Main Street and Panton Road stopped five vehicles and issued three tickets and two warnings.
On Nov. 28:
• Responded to a report of a family fight at a Victory Street residence. A woman said her son became angry, pushed her and punched a hole in a wall, and she requested a no trespass order. Police were unable to find him.
On Nov. 29:
• Posted notices about the upcoming winter parking ban on vehicles parked overnight on city streets.
• On a traffic detail on West Street and Panton and Monkton roads saw no violations.
• Dealt with a minor two-vehicle accident on South Maple Street.
• Dealt with a Main Street noise complaint due to noisy children.   
On Nov. 30:
• Talked to the owner of a vehicle that pulled into the rear parking lot of the police station and raised its hood. He told police he was there to show an officer he was working on getting his headlight fixed.
• Helped a vehicle owner get into a locked vehicle at Champlain Farms.
• Began investigation of the theft of $240 and debit and credit cards from a vehicle parked on South Maple Street and left unlocked.
• Stopped a vehicle for traveling 83 mph in a 50 mph zone  on Route 7 and ticketed the driver for speeding and failing to provide proof of liability insurance; the vehicle was grounded.
• On traffic details on Monkton Road and West Main Street saw no violations.
• Responded to a report of an unresponsive female at a Main Street apartment and determined she had been suicidal and might have taken an overdose of medication. The Vergennes Area Rescue Squad took her to Porter Hospital, where she was seen by the Counseling Service of Addison County.
• Issued a subpoena to a Waltham resident at a Main Street residence on behalf of the Addison County State’s Attorney.
On Dec. 1:
• On a West Main Street traffic detail ticketed one driver and warned another.  
• Went to Walker Avenue and dealt with a report of a windshield wiper being stolen from a vehicle; the owner later found the wiper and labeled a neighbor as a suspect.
• Responded to a one-car accident on West Main Street caused by poor road conditions.
