David Hopkins Tier, 69, of Middlebury

DAVID HOPKINS TIER

MIDDLEBURY — David Hopkins Tier, 69, died at home in Middlebury on Oct. 31, 2019. He was predeceased by his parents, Irving and Nancy Hopkins Tier, and sister Mary Ann (Mat) Oxford.
David was a 1972 graduate of Middlebury College and will be remembered by many locals as the longtime owner of and ace mechanic at The Bike Center. He was an environmental activist, promoting bicycles as transportation instead of cars and working for zero population growth.
He participated in many demonstrations over the years, from protesting the Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant to the more recent march to Montpelier for climate justice. He was a regular at the Saturday morning climate justice and peace vigils in town.
David has been on the board of directors of Spirit in Nature for years and did regular trail maintenance. He has also been employed at Brown’s Novelty Co., enjoying the classic woodworking machines. In past years he ran in marathons and local 10Ks. He has been continuing to race with the Green Mountain Bike Club for the last 20 years with his sweetheart, Donna Belcher.
He will be deeply missed by Donna and her children, by his brother Ben and his children, by Mat’s children and his stepson Jeremy,
A celebration of his life in the manner of Quakers will beheld in December. In lieu of flowers donations in his memory can be sent to Planned Parenthood or Spirit in Nature.◊
