VERGENNES — Vergennes police responded five times to a Riverside Apartments unit on Main Street on Saturday night in an effort to calm what they described as “tenants arguing over domestic issues and tenancy issues.”
Each time they sought to calm all parties, and on the third visit city police “urged them to seek other living arrangements.”
On the fourth visit one tenant told them of “a possible criminal violation” on the part of another tenant. Chief George Merkel said his department was investigating the possible crime, but declined to describe it due to its sensitive nature and due to the possibility of a false allegation.
The fifth visit produced nothing different, but proved to be the last.
In other action between Sept. 30 and Oct. 6, Vergennes police:
On Sept. 30:
• Responded to a two-car accident on Main Street that resulted in moderate damage to both vehicles; police ticketed one driver for following too closely.
• Ticketed a trucking company on Panton Road for an overweight violation and operating without an excess weight permit.
• Responded to a minor two-car accident on Hillside Drive.
On Oct. 1:
• Heard from a Macdonough Drive caller that her vehicle had sustained damage sometime during the previous week while it was parked at Northland Job Corps, an accident that was reported for insurance purposes.
• Helped a Ferrisburgh resident who requested information on how to obtain a no trespass order.
On Oct. 2 helped the Vergennes Area Rescue Squad with a male who was thought to be experiencing a medical problem; VARS evaluated and released him.
On Oct. 3:
• Helped VARS with a female experiencing mental health issues; she was examined but refused to be transported.
• At the station spoke to a Department for Children and Families worker who reported a male former resident of the John Graham Shelter had threatened to stab a DCF worker because he was prohibited from communicating with his children; police are still working with DCF on this case.
• Helped a First Street man who wanted his son removed from his residence.
On Oct. 4:
• Helped a Second Street parent whose child would not behave for her; police calmed the child down and convinced him to cooperate with his mother.
• Conducted speed enforcement on West Main Street and Panton Road and issued ten tickets and three warnings.
On Oct. 5:
• Responded to a Hillside Drive report that a female had allegedly grabbed a male’s shirt and then choked and pushed him. The male and female were separated and calmed down by officers, who determined the incident did not rise to the level of a criminal offense.
• Conducted speed enforcement on West Main Street and Hopkins Road and issued two tickets and one warning.
• Were told by a Bowman Road resident that her husband had been missing for three days after a dispute; police contacted the husband on Monday and learned he was fine.
• Responded to a report of a motorcycle operating erratically and at high speeds on High Street; police did not see him, but tracked him down and warned him.
• Responded to a report of a man who was talking loudly on his cell phone and causing a disturbance at the Bixby Library; police calmed him down and asked him to leave.
